Star dust
Louis Armstrong Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now the purple dusk of twilight time
Steals across the meadows of my heart
High up in the sky the little stars climb
Always reminding me that we're apart
You wander down the lane and far away
Leaving me a song that will not die
Love is now the stardust of yesterday
The music of the years gone by.

Sometimes I wonder, how I spend
The lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
The melody
Haunts my reverie
And I am once again with you
When our love was new
And each kiss an inspiration
But that was long ago
And now my consolation is in the stardust of a song

Besides the garden wall, when stars are bright
You are in my arms
The nightingale
Tells his fairytale
Of paradise, where roses grew
Though I dream in vain
In my heart it will remain

My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain.

Sometimes, I wonder why I spend
The lonely nights
Baby, lonely nights
Dreaming of a song
Melody my memory
And I am once again with you
When our love was new, oh babe
Each kiss an inspiration
That was long ago
Now my consolation is
In the stardust of a song

Beside a garden wall
When stars are bright
You were in my arms, baby babe
The nightingale tells his fairy tale
A paradise, where roses bloom
Though I dream in vain, oh babe
In my heart, it will remain
My stardust melody
The memory of love's refrain
Mama, mmmm, love's refrain

Hard to believe in less than two years, Louis Armstrong will have been gone for 50 years. His enormous artistry remains an inspiration and continues to bring so much joy.

50 years!!' I played trumpet and sang this fine tune in 1962 (my twenties) in de pub in Callao. Hardly spoke english.
Made a funny mistake " constllation" Didnt even know the lyrics; a sailor from the usa stood next to me and helped me out ......... I still have the tape.... dont dare to listen.
Louis is still my hero "what a wonderful legend" And I blow my horn daily.

@Yrr666

@Jan Berings You know how big and important the man and his music was. I always wanted to play the trumpet but never got the chance. Keep your great memories close to your heart.

I’m 73 and bought tickets to see (and hear!!) Louis Armstrong perform at Toronto’s O’Keefe Centre. I think the year was 1964.......not positive. His performance was the first live jazz performance I had ever seen.
Magic!!

@faithbaldwin69

It's 50 years 2022

@ChristianCorrao

This is some serious business. He makes the record in '31, some 3 or 4 years after the lyric is penned. He barely sings the melody as written, not to mention his trumpet playing. A true improviser at the dawn of improvising. Maybe I'm crazy, but these days I'm thinking he just might be the most influential musician that has ever lived.

You're not crazy at all

Right On Man.

Read Pops by Terry Teachout, one of the finest biographies I've read. You will love Louis Armstrong even more than you do now.
