Ending
Louis Armstrong And His Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

let's have a happy ending
look at the sun
trying to drive those shadows away
the longest lane will soon be bending
flowers will bloom sending the good news over the way
spring will soon come smiling down the lane
hallelujah, i'm myself again
roll on roll on the happy ending
let us be gay and all the clouds will go away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in "Ending" by Louis Armstrong And His Band are all about finding happiness after a difficult situation. The song opens with the phrase "let's have a happy ending," which sets the tone for the rest of the piece. The singer then urges the listener to "look at the sun" and "drive those shadows away." This imagery of light and dark is a common theme throughout the song, with the idea of spring and new beginnings coming after a time of darkness and hardship.

The next line, "the longest lane will soon be bending," is a metaphor for the idea that even the most difficult situations will come to an end eventually. The imagery of flowers blooming and sending "the good news over the way" reinforces this idea of hope and new growth. The chorus then comes in with the line "spring will soon come smiling down the lane," which further emphasizes the theme of new beginnings and happiness.

The final lines of the song are a celebration of joy and optimism. The singer proclaims "hallelujah, I'm myself again" and urges the listener to "roll on roll on the happy ending." This is a powerful message of hope and resilience, encouraging the listener to keep pushing through difficult times and celebrating the happiness that comes after. The phrase "let us be gay and all the clouds will go away" is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, joy and positivity can be found.

The greatest jazz piece ever laid down, it is just as relevant now as it was in the 20's and will still be centuries from now. Louis Armstrong and his band gave this gift to the world and this number has no doubt influenced untold numbers of musicians and anyone else who hears it. The first time you her it will blow your mind like Louis blows his cornet. A true gem of a jazz piece. Very special.

A fabulous performance, a masterpiece... Thank you, Grzegorz, I already have this tune in my favorites but without video, so I get this one to my favorites, too.

EARL TROMBLEY

Perfect! He's the reason many people took up the trumpet. He invented jazz singing.

Ole Flogger

Well, as far as him inventing jazz singing goes, I think Ma Rainey might differ.

This song makes me think of a hot summer day in the 1930s...sitting out on a porch, relaxing, and thinking...

Holy shit! Their's music like this out there. Listening to Louie play that note after the piano solo is not unlike looking onto the face of God.

John K

Then the piano, immediately after Louie's solo that starts with the long note you mention, hits a chord at 02:56 that sounds like it fell right out of the sky from Beethoven. Where did that come from?
