In 1926 returned to Chicago where he recorded as the Hot Five and Hot Seven, producing classic jazz such as West End Blues, Potato Head Blues, Cornet Chop Suey, Heebie Jeebies and Tight Like That. In effect, Louis "invented" swing and brought the soloist into the spotlight with his trumpet and his vocals.
During the 1930's his popularity soared as an entertainer and leader of a big band. Hits included Swing That Music, The Saints, Struttin with Some Bar-B-Que, Pennies From Heaven and Jeepers Creepers.
In the mid-1940's he returned to the small band format, Armstrong and the All Stars, with Jack Teagarden, Barney Bigard, Earl Hines and rhythm. He maintained this format with varied personnel until his death in 1971. During his last decade he had hits of Hello Dolly and What A Wonderful World.
It is widely accepted that Louis Armstrong was the most influential instrumentalist and vocalist jazz has ever known.
So Little Time
Louis Armstrong And His Orchestra Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's so little time for dreams to come true
Many a ship to sail, many a magic land
Many a moonlit trail, many a road to walk hand in hand
There's songs of love we never have sung
Let's not waste one hour, the night is still young
Mama, a lifetime's not enough for the love I have for you
The lyrics of Louis Armstrong's song "So Little Time" speaks to the fleeting nature of time and the importance of living life to the fullest. The opening line, "There's so little time and so much to do," immediately sets up the theme of time being limited and precious. Throughout the song, Armstrong lists off various opportunities and adventures that life has to offer, from sailing ships and exploring magic lands, to walking hand in hand on moonlit trails. He acknowledges that there are even more experiences waiting to be had that we may never get the chance to experience.
The lyrics take a more personal turn as Armstrong sings, "There's songs of love we never have sung." This can be interpreted as missed opportunities or regrets for not expressing love or affection to the people we care for. Armstrong emphasizes the importance of not wasting time and advises to make the most of the present moment, as he sings, "Let's not waste one hour, the night is still young." The song ends on a heartfelt note with Armstrong expressing his love for his mother, acknowledging that even a lifetime is not enough time to fully express the love he has for her.
Overall, the lyrics of "So Little Time" are a gentle reminder that time is precious and it's important to make the most of the time we have, particularly when it comes to our relationships with loved ones. It encourages listeners to seize opportunities and not let the fear of the unknown hold us back.
