Il Faut Se Taire
Louis Garrel Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song "Il Faut Se Taire" by Louis Garrel is a powerful ode to the importance of silence in certain situations. The opening lines, "Se taire, tu m'en as tant dit, Plus rien ne m'etonne," suggest that the singer has been bombarded with words and has become desensitized to them. As a result, they advocate for keeping quiet and making silent promises instead. The idea of speaking too much is further emphasized in the lines "Les mots de trop, Il faut se taire" which translates to "Words are too much, we must stay silent."
The song goes on to describe how sometimes it's better to say nothing at all, even if it means having a dialogue of the deaf. The lines "Parfois, crois moi, on doit se taire, Gardes ta salive, Que je puisse enfin la faire couler dans ma gorge, Comme un doux venin" suggest that it's necessary to hold back words so that they can later be released like a sweet poison.
The song ends with a plea to stay silent, "Nos levres sont seches et nos bouches vont mieux, A faire que se prendre au mot, Que se prendre au jeu, Parfois, crois moi, on doit se taire enfin, Se taire a la fin," indicating that sometimes not saying anything is more important than winning an argument.
