Caldonia
Louis Jordan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walkin' with my baby, she got great big feet
She long, lean and lanky
And ain't had nothing to eat
But she's my baby
And I love her just the same
Crazy 'bout that woman 'cause Caldonia is her name

Caldonia, Caldonia
What make your big head so hard, ma?
I love you, I love you just the same
I always love you, baby, 'cause Caldonia is your name

You know my mama told me to leave Caldonia alone
That's what she told me, no kiddin'
That's what she said
She said, "Son, keep away from that woman, she ain't no good
Don't bother with her"

But mama didn't know what Caldonia was putting down
So I'm going down to Caldonia's house
And ask her just one more time

Caldonia, Caldonia
What makes your big head so hard, ma?

Overall Meaning

The song Caldonia by Louis Jordan and His Tympany Five is about the singer's love for a woman named Caldonia, despite warnings from his mother to stay away from her. The song describes Caldonia as having great big feet and being long, lean, and lanky. Despite not having anything to eat, the singer still loves her just the same. The chorus repeats her name, asking what makes her head so hard, but stating that the singer will always love her.

The lyrics convey a sense of unconditional love for Caldonia, despite societal and familial disapproval. The line "But mama didn't know what Caldonia was putting down" suggests that Caldonia's true worth and character were not immediately apparent to those who judged her. The use of repetition in the chorus further emphasizes the singer's love and devotion to Caldonia.

Just great swinging music. Used to play Louis on the juke box in Moss Side Manchester in the 1940s I'm 86 years old now live in the USA but can still remember all the words to Louis songs, what a performer. I have nobody to share and discuss this music with now.

@sgitell

What genre was this considered at the time? Jazz? Blues?

@ThePdog3k

I bet you could turn me onto some good music. In my mid thirties, but most of the music I love was made way before I was born.
