Bridge of Sighs
Louise Goffin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is your love something that can be won?
When heaven knows how much I try
Or is there something that you're keeping?
I say goodnight, you say goodbye

I'm not pretending
To call you over something small
I just want you to tell me
That it ain't true
You know I love you
But it don't change your mind
You're just breaking my heart in two

Somewhere there's a river
Where stars don't want to shine
The postman don't deliver
But I'm dancing out of the blue
On the bridge of sighs

Once I dreamt I saw my father
He said there are chains
You just can't see
Told me to take good care
Of the ones I love
I said Who's gonna take good care of me?

Now you say that you want
Someone to depend on
But you don't like it
When I'm depending on you
You know I need you
But it don't change your mind
I just want you to say, It isn't true.

Somewhere there's a river
Where stars don't want to shine
The postman, he don't deliver

But I'm dancing out of the blue
On the bridge of sighs

Overall Meaning

In Louise Goffin's song "Bridge of Sighs", the lyrics seem to be about a relationship that has hit a rough patch. The singer is asking their partner if their love is something that can be "won" - suggesting that perhaps the partner is holding back or keeping something from them. The singer is honest about their feelings, saying that they just want to hear their partner say that whatever they're thinking isn't true, and that they love them too. The reference to the "Bridge of Sighs" could be interpreted as a metaphor for being suspended between two states - on one side, there's hope that things will work out, but on the other, there's a sense of despair and sadness.

VH1 is the only place in the US this song really got airplay on

Craig McLean

@dumb boyiam Interesting...I never followed VH1, MTV, or the like much...Where I heard it on air was a now-defunct Seattle station, KEZX, which played "Northwest Contemporary" music (local artists), as well as unusual album cuts/releases such as this song, and I only heard it (on radio) a few times in Spring, 1988.
