Wishing Well
Love Is All Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I looked for a sign on the palm of my hand
But there was nothing there that I could understand
Yeah, I looked for a sign on the palm of my hand
There was nothing there that I could understand

So I searched for a future in a deck of cards
But what I found, it won't get me far
Yeah, I searched for a future in a deck of cards
But what I found, it won't get me far

So I threw my money in a wishing well
But nothing got better; I was slightly wetter
Yeah, I threw my money in a wishing well
But nothing got better; I was slightly wetter

I'm casting spells left and right
'Til I'm cashing everything in my sight
Yes, I'm casting spells left and right
'Til I'm cashing everything in my sight

In a burning building it was time to go
I left my eggs on the stove
It burned my shoes, and I stained my dress

I threw my money in a wishing well
But nothing got better; I was slightly wetter
Yeah, I threw my money in a wishing well
But nothing got better; I was slightly wetter

Get yourself
Out of here

I'm casting spells left and right
'Til I'm cashing everything in my sight

Yes, I'm casting spells left and right
'Til I'm cashing everything in my sight

Overall Meaning

The song, Wishing Well by Love Is All, is a narrative of the singer's attempt to find a sign of hope and happiness, with each attempt leading them to disappointment. At the start of the song, the singer looks for a sign on the palm of their hand, hoping to find clarity and direction in their life, but instead, they find nothing. They then turn to a deck of cards to predict their future, yet again finding no solace. In the chorus, the singer throws their money into a wishing well, hoping for a change, but instead, they are still left unsatisfied and soaking wet.

The second verse is about the singer's desperation to change their fate by using magic, casting spells left and right to try and bring about a change. However, this too only leads them to a path of destruction as they become obsessed with cashing everything in their sight. Finally, in the last verse, the singer finds themselves in the midst of a burning building, realizing the futility of their efforts.

The lyrics are symbolic of the human condition, where we often find ourselves searching for happiness, success, and direction but are instead met with failure and disappointment. The song suggests that no external force will bring us happiness; we have to look within ourselves to find our worth and purpose.
