Love Spirals Downwards Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Goeth sun under, groweth seed bloweth
That wereden bright golde
Springeth sing, murie sing
Goeth sun under tre

Wherebeth they biforen us weren
And hadden feld and wode
The wood comes into leaf
Thou might and canst and owest shield
Therein never havest owest then
Maiden evermore

Weree so water in wore rune
He may me bliss bringe
When spray begin springe
Nights when I wande and wake

Wherebeth they biforen us weren
And hadden feld and wode
The wood comes into leaf
Thou might and canst and owest shield
Therein never havest owest then
Maiden evermore

Wherebeth they biforen us weren
And hadden feld and wode
The wood comes into leaf
Thou might and canst and owest shield
Therein never havest owest then
Maiden evermore

With troubled eyes are

Never have I cast
Me you with thy song

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Love Spirals Downwards' song "And the Wood Comes Into Leaf" hold a reflection on the cyclical nature of seasons, the passing of time, and the evolution of life. The opening lines can be interpreted as a description of the end of the day; the sun setting, seeds scattering on the breeze, and the golden glow that remains. The song then transitions to the spring season, marked by the growth of leaves and the exuberant singing of birds.

The repeated phrase "Wherebeth they biforen us weren" is a reference to the generations that came before us, who owned fields and woods and witnessed the recurring patterns of the natural world. The singer contemplates their own place in this continuity, listening to the call of water and waiting for the start of spring.

The final lines of the song refer to the transformative power of music; the singer is moved by the song being sung to them, and in turn, they sing to others with "troubled eyes." The song seems to convey a sense of awe and humility towards the grandeur of creation, and an appreciation for the small, fleeting moments of beauty that are so easy to miss in the midst of daily life.

25 years ago!? I remember hearing this CD for the first time at the time, during my senior year in high school, thinking "gosh, they sound like the Cocteau Twins, but I like this a lot more." Nearly impossible for me to fathom that a quarter century has passed since then. I still remember the excitement I felt back then whenever I came across a fantastic music artist, and the worlds of associated music it could open up.
