Six O'Clock
Lovely Rita Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Six o′clock in the morning and the buzzer goes off
I hear the sound of a voice
Now's the time to collect my thoughts and make up my mind
If I wanna get up on time
And I don′t know what to do, and I don't know what to say

Should I stay in my love nest, take a nap, read a book
So I'd forget ′bout the rest
I got this chapter to finish, will he kill that big whale
Is she going to make him a man?
And I don′t know what to do, and I don't know what to say

Well it takes pluck to seize the day
To rise and greet a brand new day
The warmth of pillows on my heart
It′s six o'clock
I lie awake and hug my bolster
Fluffy feathers flying low
A blindfold on me eyes, oh boy
It′s six o'clock

Can′t they give me a break, I smoke my first cigarette
I need a minute or two
With all the sleep that I get and this pain in my neck
I'd rather turn in and snooze
And I don't know what to do, and I don′t know what to say

The world can go round without me
I got enough on my plate as it is
Oulala I can′t believe it's six o′clock
A clock is ticking in my brain
To me those working days all look the same
Oulala I can't believe it′s six o'clock

Ten o′clock in the morning, got me breakfast in bed
Well yes I did it again
There is no way I'm going to let them do what they said
And crush the dreams in my head

Well that's when my phone rings, I pull the plug out
And yell " Don′t wanna join in the game"
Yes I hear the bells chime, but believe me that instead

I′d rather snuggle in bed
Now I do know what to do, and I do know what to say

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lovely Rita's song Six O'Clock describe the inner turmoil that comes with waking up early in the morning. The singer hears the sound of a voice, and this becomes the trigger for her to collect her thoughts and make up her mind about what to do. She contemplates staying in her love nest, taking a nap, or reading a book. She is torn between wanting to seize the day and wanting to snooze in bed. This inner dialogue is captured in the lyrics "And I don't know what to do, and I don't know what to say."

The song reflects the universal feeling of dread that comes with waking up early and having to face the day ahead. The lyrics describe the physical and emotional sensations that are associated with morning routines, from the warmth of pillows on the heart to the pain in the neck that comes with sleeping in the wrong position. The singer is conflicted about whether she should embrace the new day or retreat back into her dreams. However, by the end of the song, she decides that she will not let others crush the dreams in her head and that she will stay in bed if she so desires.
