I Wanna Be Like Johnny C
Loveninjas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's not religion though I pray
Every minute of the day
Second to no one

A voice that shock my body
You sing and girls go naughty
I wanna be like you Johnny
Without a thought I'd kill my friends (to be like Johnny)
I wouldn't care If I could stop pretend (to be like Johnny)
Second to no one

My songs are weak and sleazy
I give it a try, but it sounds so cheesy
You make it look so easy!

That attitude, I want it so bad

I'm so pathetic when I try (to look like Johnny)
My mother says I'll never know what it's like
(to be you Johnny)
Second to no one

I want a taste of Johnny

I wanna sing I wanna speed I wanna breathe like you Johhny
I wanna be like Johnny!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Loveninjas's song "I Wanna Be Like Johnny C" are filled with a longing and admiration for the titular character of Johnny C. The singer in the song indicates that they pray every day, but it is not for religious reasons - rather, it seems to be for the chance to be like Johnny. This is further emphasized by the line "Second to no one", which suggests that the singer believes Johnny to be the ultimate example to follow. Johnny's voice has a physical effect on the singer, causing them to feel a shock through their body. Furthermore, Johnny's singing apparently has a powerful effect on girls, making them "go naughty". From the singer's perspective, becoming like Johnny is the ultimate goal - so much so that they claim they would kill their friends without a second thought just to be like him.

The second verse of the song furthers the idea that the singer sees Johnny as the epitome of cool. They express jealousy and dissatisfaction with their own music, saying that their songs are "weak and sleazy" and that they're unable to replicate the effortless cool that Johnny exudes. The singer feels that Johnny makes it all look so easy, and they want to achieve that kind of effortless cool for themselves. The line "That attitude, I want it so bad" makes it clear that the singer isn't just admiring Johnny's musical talent - they want to embody his whole persona, including his attitude and demeanor. Despite their desires, however, the singer feels "pathetic" when they try to emulate Johnny, and their mother tells them they'll never be able to truly be like him.

If you can take a closer look at the shrine thingy, they are all sketches of JTHM. Also, the song is called "I want to be like Johnny C." That's the character's name. And, the line "I killed my friends to be like Johnny" is pretty indicative of JTHM. No, Johnny didn't sing anything, but in the comics he briefly dated a girl named Devi who was intially interested in him because of the way he spoke to her.

And at one point Reverend Meat implied that there had been another girl that Johnny can't remember. I think he said something like, "It disturbs me that you do not remember the girl who gave me to you. What you did to her in her room. What she did to you." Or something like that.
