Death of a Salesman
Low Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So I took my guitar
And I threw down some chords
And some words I could sing
Without shame
And I soon had a song
I played it around
For some friends
But they all said the same

They said "Music's for fools
You should go back to school
The future is prisons and math."
So I did what they said
Now my children are fed
Cause they pay me to do what I'm asked

I forgot all my songs
The words now are wrong
And I burned my guitar in a rage
But the fire came to rest

In your white velvet breast
So somehow I just know that it's safe

Overall Meaning

The song "Death of a Salesman" by Low tells the story of a struggling musician who is constantly being told that music is not a viable career option by those around him. Despite this, he continues to write and perform music for his friends. However, they too tell him that music is foolish and he should go back to school to study something more practical, like math. The singer takes their advice and gives up on his dream of being a musician, getting a job that provides for his family. He even burns his guitar, forsaking his passion altogether.

However, the final verse of the song tells a different story altogether. The singer forgets all of his songs and the words no longer fit. He is filled with rage and burns his guitar, but the fire eventually comes to rest "in your white velvet breast", suggesting that his passion for music is rekindled in a new relationship. He somehow knows that it is safe to play music again, even though he has abandoned it for so long. This reflects the idea that passion can be reignited despite years of neglect, and that it is never too late to pursue one's dreams.

One interesting aspect of this song is that it is named after the famous play by Arthur Miller. The play examines the life of a salesman who is past his prime, reflecting on his failures and unrealized dreams. This theme of unfulfilled potential is reflected in Low's song as well.

Another interesting aspect of the song is the mention of prisons in the second verse. This could be interpreted as a commentary on the prison-industrial complex or the idea that the future is bleak and difficult to escape from.
