Silver Rider
Low Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

At times I see you
You silver rider
Sometimes your voice is not enough

Your face in windows
Outside forever
Nobody dreamed you'd save the world
Nobody dreamed you'd save the world

La la la la etc

The march is over
The great destroyer
She passes through you like a knife

Oh take me with you
You silver rider
Sometimes you voice is not enough
Sometimes your voice is not enough

La la la etc

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Low's song Silver Rider paint a picture of an enigmatic figure, the "silver rider," who seems to move effortlessly through the world. Sometimes glimpsed through windows, this rider seems to have a voice that can inspire and lead, but at other times that voice may fall short. The repeated phrase "nobody dreamed you'd save the world" suggests that this figure may have once been heroic or inspirational, but now perhaps that potential has been lost or unrealized. The sense of longing in the lyrics is palpable, as though the singer yearns to follow the silver rider, to be a part of that sense of purpose and possibility.

The second half of the song shifts into a darker, more menacing tone, with the introduction of "the great destroyer." This figure is described as passing through the silver rider "like a knife," suggesting a sense of violence or destruction. The singer makes a plea to the silver rider to take them along, to protect them from this destructive force. As the song ends on another repetition of "sometimes your voice is not enough," it's left unclear whether the silver rider has the power to truly protect or save anyone, or whether their influence is limited to a voice that may or may not inspire.

Overall, Silver Rider is a haunting and evocative song, with lyrics that suggest both a sense of lost potential and the ongoing struggle to find something to believe in. The image of the silver rider is a powerful one, conjuring up ideas of courage, leadership, and possibility, while the inclusion of the great destroyer adds a sense of danger and uncertainty. Through it all, the repeated refrain of "sometimes your voice is not enough" acts as a reminder of the limitations of even our most heroic figures, and the ongoing need to find our own strength and purpose.

By the end of their first song that night, I was sobbing. Short, but so powerful and beautiful, stark, but soothing. A sublime experience. Then the guy behind me says "hey buddy, chill. They're just tuning up."

Rest in peace Mimi Parker - we will never forget you.

Low music helped me feel through previous loss but also primed me for future loss. It just sounds so much like what losses I experienced younger and then all the more adult losses /deaths or impending deaths I have known as an older person at this point. I am really grateful to an old friend for introducing me to Low in my 20’s. It never becomes irrelevant , even almost 20 years later.

I wish Cue the Strings comments weren’t turned off . That song always is a friend when I hear someone’s died , or was there for the death, or they were told they are going to die soon possibly , or I worry about the future in general in terms of loss of life.

Headless Spaceman

This album really helped me get through some tough times when I went on a spacewalk without a tether and then my space capsule got destroyed and I was adrift in space in just my spacesuit for a while
