Words
Low Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hope or fear, I can't tell
What's the difference anyway
I turn to you in my dreams
But you run to edge and jump off
Make and break, what a waste
What's inside I cannot erase
I'm reaching out to you
But you run to the edge
Now I follow your trail of words
Clues lead me back to you
Did I hear you say you were not sure
That's enough hope for me
Time and place, I don't care
What's the point when you are not here
I keep running after you
But you run to the edge
Now I follow your trail of words
Clues lead me back to you
Did I hear you say you were not sure
That's enough hope for me
Was it something else hidden in your words buried deep
It's time to fly
I run to the edge
I run to the edge
Now I follow your trail of words
Clues lead me back to you
Did I hear you say you were not sure
Did I hear you say, did I hear you say
Now I follow your trail of words
Clues lead me back to you
Did I hear you say you were not sure

That's enough hope for me
I'm on a, I'm on a trail of words

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of Low's song, Words, the lyrics suggest a state of despair and hopelessness among the current generation, as they struggle to carry the heavy burden of their troubles and find themselves sinking deeper and deeper. The lines, "Are we the generation that carries the burden on our backs, are we the generation that's sinking up to our necks," clearly show a sense of exhaustion and defeat. The phrase 'double down' is used to emphasize the weight of their struggles and worries. The repetition of the phrase "Turn it around" seems however to suggest a faint glimmer of hope, as if the listener is being asked to turn the perspective on the difficulties around them and view them from a different angle.

The song then shifts its focus to the older generation, asking for words of advice and wisdom from parents and grandparents. Despite the overwhelming sense of gloom, the lyrics convey a desperate desire for guidance and inspiration, a willingness to look to the past in order to move forward. The lines "Where's your mythical silver lining?" seem to reflect a sense of disillusionment that the older generation may not have all the answers but at the same time, the listener is reaching out for any shred of hope, a ray of light that they desperately need to cling onto in order to move forward.

Overall, the lyrics of Words depicts a sense of struggle, exhaustion, and despair, yet there is also an underlying message of hope and resilience - a message to persevere even when facing the most challenging of circumstances.

Lyrics:

Three inches above the floor
A man in a box wants to burn my soul
And I'm tired

Is that the truth he says
The pain is easy
Too many words, too many words

And I can hear 'em

If you're hearing screams
Come back, child, come back
My hands are dry

But I know they're gonna make it
Just one more night
Too many words, too many words

And I can hear 'em

Beautiful song.

I listened to this endlessly when I was grieving for my wife who committed suicide 8 years ago. Listening to it was this painful, comforting, wonderfully horrible embrace...We need tunes like this!

No! That is miserable. I found myself on a trail of Low songs and it lead me to this. That is heartbreaking.
