Since 2001, they have played between 150 and 200 shows a year across the United States and Canada. They have released eight full-length albums, the latest entitled Women & Work.
The members of Lucero are Roy Berry (drums), John C. Stubblefield (bass), Brian Venable (guitar), and Ben Nichols (guitar and vocals), and occasionally Rick Steff (piano, organ, accordion). Todd Gill substituted for Brian Venable from 2003 to 2004. The band also experimented with guitarist Steve Selvidge in the early months of 2003. Ben Nichols' previous band was Red 40 in which he played alongside Colin Brooks and Steve Kooms.
In late 2008 the band announced they had signed a four album deal with Universal Music Group. Their album, 1372 Overton Park, was released October 6, 2009.
The Last Pale Light in the West, the first solo release from frontman Ben Nichols, was released in January 2009 on the band's own label Liberty & Lament. The 7 song record was inspired by Cormac McCarthy's book Blood Meridian.

Lucero Lyrics

Your favorite dress, motorcycle boots, raised on Rock & Roll
Now don't, don't give up on me, not quite yet
Leaving me, with only letters that, I said I never kept
Nights, nights so long, they can kill a man
Years, years so fast, it's all the same
Now why, don't you leave, another day
Tell me why, just why, you have to go
Cause I'm, I'm no good, out here on my own
The lyrics to Lucero's song "1979" are bittersweet and nostalgic. The song seems to be about a past relationship, specifically in the year 1979. The lyrics paint a picture of a young, vibrant love between two people. The singer recalls his partner wearing her favorite dress and motorcycle boots, and listening to Rock & Roll. The imagery of "skin and bones" suggests a youthful energy and carefree attitude.
However, despite the love they once shared, something has gone wrong. The singer is pleading with his former lover to not give up on him just yet. He is haunted by the memory of the letters he promised to keep, but ultimately didn't. He reflects on the years that have passed since their love was once alive, and how quickly time seems to move. He begs his former lover not to leave him alone, recognizing that he is "no good" without her.
Overall, the lyrics to "1979" are filled with raw emotion and aching nostalgia. The singer longs for the past, and for a second chance to rekindle the love he once had. The song is a testament to the power of love and the pain of losing it.

It just blows my mind these guys aren't recognized properly. Met Ben Nichols a few years back....during the opening band's show...there he was...standing in the crowd...drinking...bobbing his head with the beat....friendly as hell.....real people....real music...as real as it gets folks.

Not a comment in over a year, I better say something. Mmm. Okay got it. I saw this song live in Chicago and Ben forgot the words of the second verse. Classic Lucero, they are like your best friends at a high school party. That is if your friends used to sit around a fire and jam on acoustics, mine did.
