Since 2001, they have played between 150 and 200 shows a year across the United States and Canada. They have released eight full-length albums, the latest entitled Women & Work.

Todd Gill substituted for Brian Venable from 2003 to 2004. The band also experimented with guitarist Steve Selvidge in the early months of 2003. On the banks of the river running through downtown
A show tonight with sweet sweet sounds
Crossed to Tennessee
But it's sweet sweet Mara Lee
Whose voice is calling me back home
To the banks of the river where I belong
Now the band is giving it their all
She says these are the best of days
Won't you stay and dance with me awhile
Little Mara Lee always sings so sweet
The pain in your heart is rock and roll
The tears in your eyes is rock and roll
Little Mara Lee always sings so sweet
The kiss of your lips is rock and roll
The blood in your veins is rock and roll
And all there is is one last song
Now the band is giving it their all
She says these are the best of days
Won't you stay and dance with me awhile
She says these are the best of days
She says these are the best of days
She says these are the best of days
The song "The Last Song" by Lucero is a bittersweet tribute to a beloved performer. Little Mara Lee is a riverbank singer whose voice has captivated and called the singer home. The song opens with a description of the river running through downtown, where Mara Lee often performs. The singer has crossed the river to Tennessee but feels drawn back to the banks where Mara Lee sings. The repetition of "sweet sweet Mara Lee" emphasizes her talent and perhaps the singer's affection for her.
The chorus expresses the poignancy of a final performance. The band is giving it their all, and Mara Lee's voice is as sweet as ever. But there is an undercurrent of sadness, as if the singer is hesitant to let the moment end. Mara Lee's invitation to "stay and dance with me awhile" is a plea to savor the present and not to let it slip away. The second verse describes the pain and passion of rock and roll, and how Mara Lee's voice embodies those emotions. There is a sense of unity among the performers and their listeners, as if they all share a common bond through the music.
The repetition of "she says these are the best of days" reinforces the message to appreciate the present moment. The song is both a celebration of Mara Lee's talent and a reminder to cherish what we have before it's gone. The haunting melody and the wistful lyrics make "The Last Song" a poignant tribute to the fleeting beauty of life.

This song encapsulates so many feelings. Just being able to know and be with somebody who appreciates and feels those special moments along the way. It’s a rare treat. If it happens and you’re in that moment just grab hold of it. Life is too short. 👌🏽
