Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh Jah the wicked
Are upon I and I in their multitude
(wicked are on upon I till I die livin on I and I)
Tryin to conquer I and I leading us to all supplications

Yes I call on Jah (Jah) to raise I and I to ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against babylon
Yes I call on Jah (Jah) to raise I and I to ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against the wicked one

Jah send Moses and Aaron to take I and I to the promise land
Who send Joshau who is the son of Nun
who brought I and I to cross river Jordan
Though the Amorites, the Hittites (Hittites) and the Canaanite
And Perizzites all try to fight against the Israelites
Jah gave us victory before the day light

Cos' we call on Jah (Jah) to redeem I and I inna ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against babylon
Yes I call on Jah (Jah) to raise I and I to ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against the wicked one

We will conquer and take over the land that was promise
To our fathers we will share equally among our families
From Israel straight to Utopia
callin upon all the Ipioshite (Ipioshite)
All you Nazzerites oh Israelites come along and let us rectify
Let us rise and take our God given rights

Cos' we call on Jah (Jah) to redeem I and I inna ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against babylon
Yes I call on Jah (Jah) to raise I and I to ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against the wicked man

(deliver I and I oh Jah) I see the heathen and the rage
I still image vain things sit before kings
(deliver us from internal war) of the earth
Set themselves the rulers of the earth conjugate against the Lord
Against His anointed saints come over to break their asunder
And cast away the hands (free up
israelites from the hands of the wicked)
For I Ver .Jah will deliver I and I Rastafari

Yes' we call on Jah (Jah) to redeem I and I inna ‘geddon
And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I
against babylon (Hail Emperor Haile Selassie)
Yes I call on Jah (Jah) to raise I and I to ‘geddon

And I hail for I (Rastafari) defend I and I against the wicked man
Call on Yahweh Aovia Rastafari...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Luciano's song "Call On Yahweh" express his trust in Jah (God) to protect him and his people from the many wicked forces that seek to conquer them. He sees historical examples of Jah’s intervention on behalf of His people, and is convinced that Jah will again deliver them in the present. Luciano calls upon Rastafari, a cultural movement that reveres Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia as the incarnation of Jah, to defend them against the oppressive forces of Babylon (a symbol of oppressive power).

The first verse describes the wicked forces surrounding the singer, and their goal to conquer and subjugate them. However, the singer is not despairing, for he calls amongst the name of Jah (Jah being a term used by Rastafarians to refer to God) to protect and deliver them. The singer compares his present situation to the conquest of Canaan by the Israelites in ancient times, wherein they too faced great opposition, but through Jah's intervention, they emerged victorious.

The second half of the song then shifts to an exhortation to the Rastafarian community to stand and reclaim the promised land. Luciano invites fellow Rastafarians to unite and collectively claim control over their God-given rights, from Israel straight to Utopia. The song ends with repeated calls to Jah to redeem and defend the singer and his people, together with a call to Rastafari to defend against Babylon and the wicked man.
