Miss Sarajevo
Luciano Pavarotti Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is there a time for keeping your distance?
A time to turn your eyes away?
Is there a time for keeping your head down?
For getting on with your day?
Is there a time for kohl and lipstick?
A time for curling hair?
Is there a time for high street shopping?
To find the right dress to wear?

Here she comes, oh oh
Heads turn around
Here she comes
To take her crown

Is there a time to run for cover?
A time for kiss and tell?
Is there a time for different colors?
Different names you find it hard to spell
Is there a time for first communion?
A time for East Seventeen?
Is there a time to turn to Mecca?
Is there time to be a beauty queen?

Here she come, oh oh
Beauty plays the clown
Here she comes
Surreal in her crown

Dici che il fiume
Trova la via al mare
E come il fiume
Giungerai a me
Oltre i confini
E le terre assetate
Dici che come fiume
Come fiume
L'amore giungerà
L'amore
E non so più pregare
E nell'amore non so più sperare
E quell'amore non so più aspettare

(Is there a time) for tying ribbons?
(A time) for Christmas trees?

(Is there a time) for laying tables?
And the night is set to freeze?

Overall Meaning

The song Miss Sarajevo is a collaboration between U2 and Luciano Pavarotti, released in 1995. This song was written in response to the war in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which lasted from 1992 to 1996. The lyrics of the song describe the struggles and questions that people face in times of political and social unrest.

The opening verses of the song ask the listener if there is a time to ignore the problems and carry on with personal life, or if they should stand up to the challenges and try to make a difference. The repeated phrase, "Here she comes, to take her crown," represents the image of the beauty contest winner, which is a strong contrast to the war-torn surroundings. The lyrics question the value of beauty pageants and other trivial matters when there are more significant issues to be addressed.

The chorus of the song is in Italian and translates roughly as "You say that the river finds the way to the sea, and as the river, you'll come to me. Beyond the borders and the thirsty lands, you say that as the river, love will come. And I can't pray anymore, in love I can no longer hope, and for that love, I can no longer wait." These lines express the realities and emotions of the war in Sarajevo and the struggles of the people affected by it.
