He soon gained fame due to the power and strength of his voice. The young tenor earned valuable experience and significant recognition while touring on the invitation of soprano Joan Sutherland, making his 1965 U.S. debut in Miami, Florida on her recommendation. His position was solidified in the years between 1966 and 1972, during which Pavarotti first appeared at Milan's seminal La Scala, at other major European houses, and, in 1968, at NYC's Metropolitan Opera. He received great acclaim, particularly working well with Joan Sutherland.
By the mid-70s, the tenor became known worldwide, famed for the brilliance and beauty of his tone, especially into the upper register. His "high C" became one of his trademarks. The late 70s and 80s saw Pavarotti making significant appearances in the world's opera houses and establishing himself as one of the great singers of the era.
Popular stardom came at the 1990 World Cup in Italy with the performances of "Nessun Dorma" (from Turandot) and as one of The Three Tenors in their famed first concert held on the eve of the final match of the tournament (repeated at later Cups). Pavarotti sang together with fellow star tenors Plácido Domingo and José Carreras and brought to the much wider audience hits previously confined to the opera world. Appearances in advertisements and with pop icons in concerts around the world furthered his influence. Pavarotti always maintained his identity as an opera star, unlike many crossover artists.
The later years brought a decline in ability to perform on stage due to a weight gain and lack of mobility. Pavarotti's final appearance in an opera was at the Met in March 2004. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy saw him performing for the last time. Pavarotti sang Nessun Dorma, with the crowd as its Chorus, and got a thunderous standing ovation. On September 6, 2007, he died at home in Modena from pancreatic cancer.

Grazie mille a tutti
Grazie, grazie
There comes a time
When we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
The greatest gift of all
We can't go on
Pretending day-by-day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
We are all a part of God's great big family
And we're truth, love is all we need
We are the world
We are the children
We are the ones who make a better day
So let's start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Oh, send them your heart
So you know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
Oh, as God has shown us by turning stone to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children, yeah)
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving (oh-oh)
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me (yeah)
Now when you're down and out, there seems no hope at all (hope at all)
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
No, no, no, just realize
Oh, that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children)
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving (let's start giving)
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
(Everybody now, come on now)
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children)
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So let's start giving (so let's start giving)
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children)
We are the ones who'll make a brighter day
So let's start giving (giving, so let's start giving)
There is a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me (yeah-yeah) (yeah, yeah)
We are the world (we are the world)
We are the children (we are the children)
We are the ones who'll make a brighter day
So let start giving (so let's start giving)
There's a choice we're making (oh, there's a choice we're making)
We're saving our own lives
It's true we'll make a better day
Just you and me (oh, oh, oh-oh)
Grazie mille
Grazie
Mille grazie, ancora
The final three lines of the lyrics are spoken in Italian and translate to "Sweet, polite, patient. Thank you very much everyone. Thank you, thank you." This is likely a message of gratitude to those who participated in the song and its message of unity and hope for a better future.
"We Are The World" was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985 as a charity single to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. It was produced by Quincy Jones and became the fastest-selling American pop single in history, selling over 20 million copies worldwide.
The song features a star-studded lineup of over 40 popular musicians, including Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Cyndi Lauper, among others. They came together under the name USA for Africa and recorded the song in one day, on January 28, 1985.
The song's message is one of hope and unity, urging people to come together to make a difference in the world. It highlights the idea that people of all backgrounds and cultures can join together to create a better future, and that change can begin with a single act of kindness.
The opening lines of the song are a call to action, urging people to recognize the suffering and need in the world and to take action to help those who are struggling. The lyrics emphasize the importance of unity and the power of collective action to make a difference in the world.
The song's chorus is one of the most recognizable parts of the song, with its soaring melody and infectious rhythm. It urges people to come together and make a difference, reminding listeners that they have the power to create a brighter future for themselves and for others.
The song was released in March 1985 and quickly became a worldwide hit, reaching the top of the charts in countries around the world. It also won four Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
In addition to raising funds for famine relief in Ethiopia, the song's success helped to raise awareness of the humanitarian crisis in Africa and inspired other charity singles and events to raise money for similar causes.
The song's music video is an iconic part of pop culture history, featuring the famous image of dozens of musicians standing shoulder to shoulder and singing together. It has been parodied and referenced in numerous movies and TV shows over the years.
Despite its enduring popularity and message of hope and unity, some critics have criticized the song for its overly simplistic lyrics and message, arguing that it ignores the complexity of the issues it addresses.

There comes a time
There reaches a point
When we heed a certain call
When we respond to a specific call
When the world must come together as one
When all the people in the world should unite as one
There are people dying
Some people are dying
Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life
It is now time to help and support life
The greatest gift of all
The most valuable thing of all
We can't go on
We cannot keep living
Pretending day-by-day
Acting like everything is okay every single day
That someone, somewhere will soon make a change
That somebody somewhere will bring a change soon
We are all part of God's great big family
All of us belong to God's big family
And we're truth, love is all we need
We believe in the truth that all we need is love
We are the world
All of us constitute the world
We are the children
We are young and innocent human beings
We are the ones who make a brighter day
We are responsible for creating a better future
So let's start giving
Let's start donating/helping
There's a choice we're making
We have the freedom to decide
We're saving our own lives
We are preserving our own existence
It's true we'll make a better day
This is absolutely correct, we will create a brighter future
Just you and me
Only us two
Oh, send them your heart
Express your love towards them
So you know that someone cares
So that they understand that at least someone is concerned about them
And their lives will be stronger and free
This will make their lives stronger and independent
Oh, as God has shown us by turning stone to bread
Similar to a miracle where God converted stone to bread
And so we all must lend a helping hand
Therefore, each one of us must support and assist
Now when you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
When you're feeling hopeless and down,
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
If you have faith, there's no way we can get defeated
No, no, no, just realize
No, no, no, just recognize
Oh, that a change can only come
That any alteration can only happen
When we stand together as one
Only when we unite as one force
Everybody now, come on now
Everyone, come together now
Mille grazie
A thousand thanks
