My Way
Luciano Pavarotti & Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now, the end is near
And so I face the final curtain
My friend, I'll make it clear
I'll state my case, of which I am certain

I've lived a life that's full
I've traveled each and every highway
And more, much more
I did it, I did it my way

Regrets, I had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
I saw it through without exemption

I planned each charted course
Each careful step along the byway
And more
Much, much more
I did it, I did it my way

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you knew
When I bit off more than I could chew
But through it all, when there was doubt
I ate it up and spit it out
I faced it all and I stood tall
And did it my way

For what is a man, what has he got
If not himself, then he has naught
Not to say the things that he truly feels
And not the words of someone who kneels
And the record shows

I took all the blows
And did it my way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to My Way, a song originally written by Paul Anka and famously performed by both Luciano Pavarotti and Frank Sinatra, are deeply reflective and introspective. The song tells the story of a person nearing the end of their life, looking back on the choices they've made and the paths they've taken. The first stanza sets the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer acknowledging that their time is running out and that they're ready to face the final curtain. They make it clear that they're happy with their life, and that they've done things their own way.

The second stanza delves further into the singer's feelings about their life. They explain that while they've had some regrets, they're few and far between. They did what they had to do and saw it through without any exceptions. The third stanza reflects on the singer's journey, and how they carefully charted their course and took each step with intention. They did it their way, and it's clear that they're proud of that fact.

The final stanza is perhaps the most powerful of all. The singer muses on what it means to be a man, and concludes that if a man doesn't have himself, he has nothing. The words urge listeners to speak their truth and express themselves honestly, rather than bowing down to others' expectations or trying to be someone they're not. The final line of the song is a statement of resilience and determination, with the singer declaring that they took all the blows life threw at them and still did it their way.

How I went 25 years in this life not knowing this was a thing baffles me. This is outstanding. RIP legends. 🙏 BRAVO

Don't feel bad Sir. When I was 40 I noticed that I was coming across something that was new to me, but apparently not to anyone else, and I wondered how I had missed it for so long. A few months ago I turned 60 and let me tell ya' buddy, now it's happening around every month in so. So now I wonder where I've been all my life. That makes me wonder how stupid I'll feel by the time I die. So don't sweat it Man, you're not the only one of us who's doing it backwards . . . 😊

@@markdaniels2092 It happens to the best of us. I spent years saving up for a trip to London to experience Big Ben. Then I found out it's a clock.
