It was originally formed in a drastic attempt to collect money for an attorney, to fight Jennifer's parents for custody of her daughter. The attempt was unsuccesful and from The Black Death on, was strictly made out of Ryan's love of music and disdain for religion and government.

i think the scariest part of this movie and the original one was that no matter how hard they tried to escape the forest, they ended up going in circles and the witch kept manipulating their environment to damage them emotionally and drive them insane. Imagine being stuck in a forest forever until you die, that would be utterly terrifying.
