"Luscious, luminous, lilting lullabies" is how the New York Times describes songs by Lucius, a five-piece band from Brooklyn, NY.
At the center of Lucius are the "alluring and magnetic" (Seventeen) singers-in-unison, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig. After graduating from Bostonās Berklee School of Music, the two young friends and collaborators moved into an old Victorian house in Brooklynās Ditmas Park ā a former recording studio and music school. The four-story musical fortress, rife with left-behind musical treasures, housed many musician friends including, eventually, Wolfe and Laessigās future bandmates, Danny Molad, Peter Lalish and Andrew Burri.
āWhen we were ready to make our record we felt it was imperative it reflected the synergy that Holly and I feel so strongly in our personal and musical relationship,ā said Wolfe. The resulting songs are stories told from the same perspective, sung at the same time, with the same sentiment; two voices as one.
The quintetās self-titled debut EP was recorded and produced in the Ditmas Park house where the band was formed. Their full length album is due for release Autumn 2013.

Let's straighten them out
Let's straighten this whole damn mess we've gotten ourselves in
This time didn't go the way I was hoping
You've gotta get out, I've gotta get out
Keep checking the mirrors, call me as soon as you can
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way, the way it had to be
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way it had to be
(cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back)
The sun's coming up, did you make it in time?
If anyone asks you
You weren't there I found the perfect alibi
A black dahlia blooms and then she dies
Lie after lie
Is what we do best and share in common, you and I
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Oh yeah, can you keep it, can you keep it in?
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way, the way it had to be
All your plans, just a nickel in her hands
It's the way it had to be
(cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back)
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way it had to be
(cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back)
Mother you can try to find a place to hide
You can try but they'll find me
Mother you can try to find a place to hide
You can try but they'll find me
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way, the way it had to be
All your plans, just a nickel in her hands
It's the way it had to be
(cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back)
Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen
It's the way it had to be
(cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back)
The lyrics in Lucius's song Hey Doreen seem to be written from the perspective of someone who has gotten themselves into a mess, and is now trying to remedy it. The opening lines use a metaphor to describe how things have gone wrong and need to be fixed - "These buttons are in the wrong holes again, let's straighten them out, let's straighten this whole damn mess we've gotten ourselves in." The singer goes on to acknowledge that things didn't work out as planned, and they need to get out of the situation. They urge their accomplice Doreen to keep up with them and check their surroundings, suggesting that they are on the run from something, and may have committed a crime.
The refrain "Hey Doreen, we know what you have seen, it's the way it had to be" suggests that Doreen has witnessed something significant, and perhaps helped the singer get into this situation. There is an air of desperation and anxiety throughout the song, with lines like "cover your tracks, you know you can't take it back" and "all your plans, just a nickel in her hands," hinting at someone who has made rash decisions and must now deal with the consequences. The repeated lines "oh yeah, can you keep it, can you keep it in?" highlights the importance of secrecy and keeping their actions hidden.

I like this song very much of Lucius! It so great how the two singers sing together. It creates such a special vibe. I have also see them live at the valkhof festival 2016 Nijmegen Holland in the summer. That was really special! They where so good! The singers had so much charisma and the way they where dressed was also very special! I felt so much resonance with the concert and came in some kind of flow because of the music. When I went back to home on my bike I had only the thought
in my mind for half an hour: "You will ride live straight to perfect laughter, that is the only good fight their is". Of charles bukowski his movie Factotum (2005).
