Neighbors
Lucius Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I always lock the door, 'cause you never know for sure
Who your neighbors really are, real suspicious
I made my way outside in the California skies
But I couldn't feel the sunny disposition

Oh, bet you can imagine how I'm sinking

They were standing side by side
Just like mugs along the shelf
With their glaze and overrise, they couldn't help it
And no matter how I try, I just couldn't feel alive
I just stepped right into line, they never felt it

Oh, bet you can imagine how I'm sinking
Oh, oh, when the signal's always busy, baby

But like Jane Doe and her John, all of us just carried on
I was looking for somebody who could shake me
Oh, I always lock the door 'cause you never know for sure
Who your neighbors really are, maybe they'll save me

Oh, bet you can imagine how I'm sinking
Oh, oh, when the signal's always busy, baby

I'm still reeling here, maybe some sign will appear
I guess I hope it comes
It's like I'm twiddling my thumbs, sometimes I can't believe
I get so numb
You think I would've figured it out by now
You're not the only one

Oh, bet you can imagine how I'm sinking
Oh, oh, when the signal's always busy, baby

Oh, won't somebody shake me?
Oh, oh, signal's loud, but it's still busy, baby

Overall Meaning

The song "Neighbors" by Lucius is all about the struggle of feeling isolated and disconnected, even in the midst of a crowded environment. The lyrics paint a picture of someone who is always on guard, locking the door to protect themselves from the unknown dangers lurking outside, including those posed by their neighbors. The artist sings of feeling suspicious of those around them, worried that they are not who they seem. They venture out into the world, hoping to feel the warmth of the California sun, but instead find themselves feeling disconnected and empty.

The song goes on to describe the experience of feeling like one is just going through the motions, waiting for something or someone to shake them out of their stupor. The artist compares themselves to a "mug along the shelf," just going through the motions, unable to fully engage or connect with those around them.

Overall, "Neighbors" is a song about the struggle of feeling disconnected and alone in a busy, crowded world. It touches on themes of isolation, suspicion, and the desire for connection and understanding.

Heard this on Hard Knocks last night. Reminded me of the harmonies of The Mammas and The Pappas' California Dreamin so I had to come listen to the whole song. very nice.
