Born David Debrandon Brown, Lucky Daye is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana. Raised in a cult that forbade secular music, he nonetheless discovered an innate knack for singing. After his mother left the cult, Brown immersed himself in classic R&B and eventually fell particularly hard for the likes of Stevie Wonder and Rick James. Uprooted by Hurricane Katrina, he moved to Tyler, Texas, but soon relocated to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue music. He established himself as a songwriter and background vocalist, and across 2008 and 2009, landed credits on material by Keith Sweat (a handful of cuts on Just Me) and Ne-Yo ("She Got Her Own"). Brown wasn't as active the next few years — he did write for Boyz II Men ("Believe Us") — though he shifted gear during the latter half of the 2010s. During 2016 and 2017, he co-wrote songs released by Keke Palmer ("Enemiez"), Ella Mai ("10,000 Hours," "Down"), Trey Songz ("Song Goes Off"), and Mary J. Blige (including two tracks off Strength of a Woman), among other contemporary R&B artists. Signed as a recording artist to the RCA-supported Keep Cool label, Brown — by then living in Los Angeles — made his debut as Lucky Daye in 2018. First was "Little More Time," a Victoria Monet collaboration included on the soundtrack for Insecure's third season. Next came the single "Roll Some Mo," followed shortly thereafter by I, the song's parent EP. These six cuts, all written with and produced by D'Mile, prompted comparisons to Frank Ocean but also fell somewhere between comparatively soul-rooted progressives BJ the Chicago Kid and Daniel Caesar. ~ Andy Kellman

Fighting, calling you, baby
Know you get a kick out of kicking it
Then stalling me crazy
Let's get curious, took it serious
Take the best that life offering, baby
You know how it go, first you lose your clothes
We start fucking 'round, now we in it
It's emotions in your ocean, I could drown all day
When we wine and dine, it's too much fun, pretend love me
Sweet bittersweet liquor, intoxicate me (intoxicate me)
Don't spill it, feel it, get it, kill it
Hold up, let's concentrate (oh, oh)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (oh, oh)
So hard to concentrate (oh, oh)
'Cause you're keepin' all in my head
Just a little conversation with you
Temptation, now it's controlling me
You only come around when I'm in town
You don't want nowhere else just to be
(Ayy-ayy-ayy-ayy-ayy-ayy-ayy-ayy)
You a open, closed case when I hope it ain't
I just think I can when I know I can't
It's emotions in your ocean, I could drown all day
When we wine and dine, it's too much fun, pretend love me
Sweet bittersweet liquor, intoxicate me (intoxicate me)
Don't spill it, feel it, get it, kill it
Hold up, let's concentrate (oh, oh)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (oh, oh)
'Cause you're keepin' all in my head (my head, my head)
Hold up, let's concentrate (oh, oh)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (oh, oh)
So hard to concentrate (oh, oh)
'Cause you been all in my head
Hold up, let's concentrate (hold)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (we don't wanna fall, babe)
So hard to concentrate
'Cause you're keepin' all in my head
Hold up, let's concentrate (oh, oh)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (oh, oh)
So hard to concentrate (oh, oh)
'Cause you keep it all in my head (oh, whoa)
Hold up, let's concentrate (oh, oh)
If we don't wanna fall, babe (oh, oh)
So hard to concentrate (oh, oh)
'Cause you keep it all in my head
“Concentrate” by Lucky Daye is a love song that features a man who is struggling to get over a woman who gives him mixed messages. The first verse begins with Lucky Daye cruising the streets, making attempts to contact his former lover. She responds by playing hard to get, which frustrates him, urging them to explore their relationship more seriously. He insists that the best of life can be found with her, and they end up in bed together.
The chorus emphasizes the fact that they still need to concentrate on each other without necessarily engaging in sexual activities. Lucky Daye mentions the motions in her ocean and how it makes him feel, even though they have fun together when they wine and dine. However, he is not sure if she is pretending to love him or if the relationship is genuine. When they are not having sex, it still takes some form of concentration to keep the relationship going.
The second verse talks about how Lucky Daye is unable to resist temptation as his ex-girlfriend seems to pull him back in every time he comes to town. When they are together, it feels like he can do anything, even though he knows it might be a bad idea to pursue a relationship with this woman. The chorus is a repetition of the first that implies that they do not have to engage in sexual activity to enjoy each other's company.
Overall, this song is about the confusing emotions that come with the longing for someone you know isn't good for you or doesn't reciprocate your feelings. It's a reminder that even in such situations, we can still enjoy each other's company without the expectation of sexual activity.
