Lucky Dube (born August 3, 1964, died October 18, 2007) was a reggae musician from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was named Lucky because when he was born in poor health, and the doctors thought he would die. But he survived, so was named Lucky. In his youth, Lucky lived with many different family members, singing in bars and in church. He eventually formed a band with some friends, but they could not afford to purchase instruments. Eventually, Lucky wrote a play which he and his bandmates performed, earning enough money to buy a guitar. Their band was then called Skyway, and they played in the mbaqanga style.
Two years after Skyway's formation, Lucky joined Richard Siluma's Love Brothers. He stayed with them for several years, before switching to reggae in the early 1980s. His first major success in that field came at the influential Sunsplash festival in Jamaica.
Lucky's "Together as One" was the first song by a black artist to be played on a white radio station in South Africa. His two most popular albums, Prisoner and Slave, are among the most renowned and best-selling in South Africa's history. One of Lucky's favourite singers was the late Peter Tosh.
On the 18th of October 2007, Lucky was shot dead in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

They don't know what they want
They are busy kissing each other
Oh, busy kissing me
They don't know who I am
I see people moving around
They don't know what they want
Oh, busy kissing me
And you don't know who I am
Get off my chair
Give me some fresh air
Get off my chair
I want some fresh air
Get off my chair
Give me some fresh air
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
I want some fresh air
Fresh air (Bounce biz)
Fresh air (Bounce biz)
Fresh air (Bounce biz)
Fresh air, fresh air, fresh air, fresh air (Bounce biz)
Let's do something

Don't mess around
Let's have a good time

The song "Fresh Air" by Lucky Dube is a call for those around him to stop being so caught up in their own world to breathe and pay attention to their surroundings. The opening lines establish a scene of people around him who are so enamored with each other or themselves that they fail to see or acknowledge him. He's frustrated and feels trapped, hence the refrain, "Get off my chair, give me some fresh air."
The chorus repeats "Fresh air" as a way of asserting that what Lucky Dube needs most is space, both physically and mentally. The line "Let's do something positive, don't mess around, let's have a good time" serves as a reminder that it's not enough to just seek out fresh air; one has to also be intentional about using that space for good things.
Overall, "Fresh Air" is a plea for introspection, and a reminder to remain grounded and aware of the world around us. Lucky Dube is inviting a change of pace from the hustle and bustle of daily life, advocating for slowing down and making the most out of every moment.
