Lucky Dube (born August 3, 1964, died October 18, 2007) was a reggae musician from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was named Lucky because when he was born in poor health, and the doctors thought he would die. But he survived, so was named Lucky. In his youth, Lucky lived with many different family members, singing in bars and in church. He eventually formed a band with some friends, but they could not afford to purchase instruments. Eventually, Lucky wrote a play which he and his bandmates performed, earning enough money to buy a guitar. Their band was then called Skyway, and they played in the mbaqanga style.
Two years after Skyway's formation, Lucky joined Richard Siluma's Love Brothers. He stayed with them for several years, before switching to reggae in the early 1980s. His first major success in that field came at the influential Sunsplash festival in Jamaica.
Lucky's "Together as One" was the first song by a black artist to be played on a white radio station in South Africa. His two most popular albums, Prisoner and Slave, are among the most renowned and best-selling in South Africa's history. One of Lucky's favourite singers was the late Peter Tosh.
On the 18th of October 2007, Lucky was shot dead in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

I called mama on the telephone
I told her mama
I'm getting married
I could hear her voice on the other side
Of the telephone she was smiling
And she asked me a question
That I proudly answered
Did you take time to know her
I said mama
She is the best
But today it hurts me so
To go back to mama and say
Mama I'm getting divorced
Oh I'm getting divorced
This choice I made
Didn't work out the way I thought it would
This choice I made
l say
This choice I made
Didn't work out the way I thought it would
This choice l made
Mama said to me
It's not easy to understand it son
But I hope you'll make it
You'll be happy again
It's not easy to understand it son
But I hope you'll make it
You'll be happy again
It's not easy to understand it son
But I hope you'll make it
You'll be happy again
I remember in church
When the preacher man read the scriptures
You looked so beautiful
So beautiful and so innocent
I did not know that behind that beauty
Lies the true colors
That will destroy me in the near future
This choice I made
Didn't work out to be what I thought it would be
This choice I made
l say
This choice I made
Didn't work out the way I thought it would
Now I'm hurting
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
I remember when I held you by the hand
Preacher man read the scriptures
Putting words in your mouth
Maybe what the preacher man said
Was not something that was within you
Now I know what they mean when they say
Beautiful woman
Is another man's plaything
Oh Lord
I'm hurting now l say
This choice I made
Didn't work out the way I thought it would
This choice I made
This choice I made
Didn't work out the way I thought it would
Now I'm hurting
Mama said to me
It's not easy to understand it son
But I hope you'll make it
You'll be happy again (Mama said to me)
It's not easy to understand it son
But I hope you'll make it
You'll be happy again
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Mama said to me
Lucky Dube's song "It's Not Easy" tells a story of a man who is struggling with the aftermath of his failed marriage. The song starts with the man recalling the joy he felt when he called his mother to inform her of his engagement. However, he is now faced with the harsh reality of his divorce. He reminisces on the questions his mother asked him when he first informed her about his engagement, and how the circumstances have changed now. He is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his relationship did not turn out as he had hoped.
The second verse of the song highlights the contrast between the beauty of his bride and the reality of her true character. He recalls the preacher's description of his bride as being beautiful and innocent, but realizes that her true colors were revealed soon after they got married. He feels hurt and betrayed by the situation and is struggling to make sense of his current situation.
Throughout the song, the man's mother provides him with words of encouragement and hope. While his situation isn't easy, his mother believes that he can overcome it and find happiness again. The refrain "It's not easy to understand it son, but I hope you'll make it, you'll be happy again" reminds him that while things may not be easy for him right now, there is still hope for his future.
At its core, "It's Not Easy" is a story of a man struggling to come to terms with his failed marriage. Lucky Dube's powerful vocals and emotive lyrics give voice to the confusion, sadness, and hope that comes with dealing with such a complex and emotional experience.
