Lucky Dube (born August 3, 1964, died October 18, 2007) was a reggae musician from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was named Lucky because when he was born in poor health, and the doctors thought he would die. But he survived, so was named Lucky. In his youth, Lucky lived with many different family members, singing in bars and in church. He eventually formed a band with some friends, but they could not afford to purchase instruments. Eventually, Lucky wrote a play which he and his bandmates performed, earning enough money to buy a guitar. Their band was then called Skyway, and they played in the mbaqanga style.
Two years after Skyway's formation, Lucky joined Richard Siluma's Love Brothers. He stayed with them for several years, before switching to reggae in the early 1980s. His first major success in that field came at the influential Sunsplash festival in Jamaica.
Lucky's "Together as One" was the first song by a black artist to be played on a white radio station in South Africa. His two most popular albums, Prisoner and Slave, are among the most renowned and best-selling in South Africa's history. One of Lucky's favourite singers was the late Peter Tosh.
On the 18th of October 2007, Lucky was shot dead in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

We love it
We need it
Oh Lord can't live without it (Can't live without it)
When the world gets hooked on drugs (Hooked on drugs)
You and I are hooked on music (Hooked on music)
We love it
Every day
Make it your way of life
Even the Pope agrees
It is your natural way of staying (High)
We gonna be so high
You see when you smoke music
You don't have to smoke and hide
Even when policeman comes
You don't have to jump no fence (No fence)
We love it (We love it)
We smoke it (We smoke it)
We love it (We love it)
We smoke it (We smoke it)

The song "We" by the late reggae legend Lucky Dube is a celebration of music and its power to uplift and inspire. In the opening lines of the song, Dube declares that "we love it," referring to music, and that "we need it" for its positive effects on our mental and emotional wellbeing. He contrasts the addictive and destructive nature of drugs with the healing and transformative power of music. Dube asserts that while the world may be hooked on drugs, he and his fellow musicians are hooked on music, implying that music is not only addictive but also a healthier and more positive addiction.
Dube goes on to describe how people consume music in various forms, from smoking it to walking and eating it. He suggests that making music a way of life is a natural and healthy choice, one that even the Pope and the President agree with. Dube implies that music is not just a form of entertainment or a hobby but a way of being, a natural connection to staying high, or maintaining a positive mental state. By using the word "high," Dube is likely referring to the feeling of elation and joy that one can experience when listening to music.
Dube also emphasizes the freedom that music provides, stating that when you smoke music, you don't have to smoke and hide, even when the police come. In this way, Dube is advocating for the power of music to unite people, transcend societal boundaries, and bring joy and healing to all who hear it.
Overall, "We" is a passionate and celebratory ode to the power of music to inspire, heal, and connect people across all boundaries. It is a call to make music a vital part of our lives and to recognize its ability to bring us together and uplift us.
