Lucky Dube (born August 3, 1964, died October 18, 2007) was a reggae musician from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was named Lucky because when he was born in poor health, and the doctors thought he would die. But he survived, so was named Lucky. In his youth, Lucky lived with many different family members, singing in bars and in church. He eventually formed a band with some friends, but they could not afford to purchase instruments. Eventually, Lucky wrote a play which he and his bandmates performed, earning enough money to buy a guitar. Their band was then called Skyway, and they played in the mbaqanga style.
Two years after Skyway's formation, Lucky joined Richard Siluma's Love Brothers. He stayed with them for several years, before switching to reggae in the early 1980s. His first major success in that field came at the influential Sunsplash festival in Jamaica.
Lucky's "Together as One" was the first song by a black artist to be played on a white radio station in South Africa. His two most popular albums, Prisoner and Slave, are among the most renowned and best-selling in South Africa's history. One of Lucky's favourite singers was the late Peter Tosh.
On the 18th of October 2007, Lucky was shot dead in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

We love it
We need it
Oh Lord can't live without it (Can't live without it)
When the world gets hooked on drugs (Hooked on drugs)
You and I are hooked on music (Hooked on music)
We love it
Every day
Make it your way of life
Even the Pope agrees
It is your natural way of staying (High)
We gonna be so high
You see when you smoke music
You don't have to smoke and hide
Even when policeman comes
You don't have to jump no fence (No fence)
We love it (We love it)
We smoke it (We smoke it)
We love it (We love it)
We smoke it (We smoke it)

In this song, Lucky Dube celebrates the power of music and its ability to bring people together. He contrasts music with drugs that people become addicted to, and explains that while the rest of the world may be hooked on drugs, he and his listeners are hooked on music. The repetition of "we love it" and "we smoke it" creates a sense of unity and shared experience, implying that the act of listening to music is similar to smoking a joint. The lyrics suggest that music is not just a form of entertainment, but a way of life that connects people and helps them cope with difficulties.
Dube even suggests that listening to music is a natural way of staying "high", referring to the feeling of euphoria and inner peace that music can evoke. He alludes to the famous Bob Marley quote "when it hits, you feel no pain", which refers to the power of music to transcend the physical and emotional pain of everyday life. Dube also references other influential figures such as Nelson Mandela, Clinton, and even the Pope who have all been known to appreciate music.
The overall message of the song is that music is an essential part of life that we cannot live without, and that it can bring people from all backgrounds and walks of life together. It challenges the idea that music should be viewed as a guilty pleasure or a luxury, and instead reaffirms its importance as a fundamental aspect of human expression and connection.
