Lucky Dube (born August 3, 1964, died October 18, 2007) was a reggae musician from Johannesburg, South Africa. He was named Lucky because when he was born in poor health, and the doctors thought he would die. But he survived, so was named Lucky. In his youth, Lucky lived with many different family members, singing in bars and in church. He eventually formed a band with some friends, but they could not afford to purchase instruments. Eventually, Lucky wrote a play which he and his bandmates performed, earning enough money to buy a guitar. Their band was then called Skyway, and they played in the mbaqanga style.
Two years after Skyway's formation, Lucky joined Richard Siluma's Love Brothers. He stayed with them for several years, before switching to reggae in the early 1980s. His first major success in that field came at the influential Sunsplash festival in Jamaica.
Lucky's "Together as One" was the first song by a black artist to be played on a white radio station in South Africa. His two most popular albums, Prisoner and Slave, are among the most renowned and best-selling in South Africa's history. One of Lucky's favourite singers was the late Peter Tosh.
On the 18th of October 2007, Lucky was shot dead in an attempted car jacking in Johannesburg, South Africa.

When you'll need me the most
But I won't be there
There will be a time in your life
When you won't need me at all
I won't be there
But while I've got the chance
I'm gonna tell you what I know
It may seem so beautiful
From where you are
It may look so innocent
In your eyes
But let me tell you
It's not a bed of roses
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
I can sit here and teach you
Every trick in the book
But at the end of the day
It is your life
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
Good things come to those
Who got out and made them happen
They don't come to those who wait
You don't have to worry
The future is in your hands
In "Good Things," Lucky Dube addresses the harsh realities of life that come with time and experience. The first verse speaks of a time when someone will need Lucky, but he will not be there to help. It is a warning that, despite the love and support he may offer now, there will be a time when an individual will have to stand on their own. The second verse goes further, warning that the world may not be as innocent and beautiful as it appears, and that it is not a bed of roses. However, he encourages the listener not to wait for good things to happen but to be proactive, to seek out and make things happen. Good things, he says, come to those who take action.
For Lucky Dube, the song is a message to young people, in particular, to take control of their lives and not wait for things to happen or rely on others' help. He wants listeners to understand that they hold the future in their hands, and it is up to them to make it into something positive. As much as he would like to teach them everything he knows, it is ultimately their life, and they have the power to make it what they want it to be.
The repetition of the refrain "Good things come to those who got out and made them happen" emphasizes the importance of taking action, and not just waiting for good things to come passively. The song's message is both a warning of the harsh realities of life and an encouragement to take control and make the most of it.
