Dancing in the Dark
Lucy Dacus Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I get up in the evening
And I ain't got nothing to say
I come home in the morning
I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain't nothing but tired
Man, I'm just tired and bored with myself
Hey there, baby, I could use just a little help
You can't start a fire
You can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark

Messages keeps getting clearer
Radio's on and I'm moving 'round my place
I check my look in the mirror
Wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man, I ain't getting nowhere
I'm just living in a dump like this
There's something happening somewhere
Baby, I just know there is

You can't start a fire
You can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark

You sit around getting older
There's a joke here somewhere and it's on me
I'll shake this world off my shoulders
Come on, baby, this laugh's on me

Stay on the streets of this town
They'll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
Hey baby, I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
Come on now, baby, gimme just one look

You can't start a fire
Sitting 'round crying over a broken heart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
You can't start a fire
Worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark

Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark

Overall Meaning

"Dancing in the Dark" by Lucy Dacus is a cover of Bruce Springsteen's hit song from the 1984 album "Born in the USA." The song is widely regarded as a classic rocker, but Dacus crafts it into something a little more ominous and grief-stricken. The song's themes of boredom, struggle, and the search for meaning in life are reflected in the lyrics. At the beginning of the song, the singer describes their depression and their desire for connection. They feel as though they are stuck in a repetitive life cycle without purpose or joy. The singer then blasts out with the refrain "you can't start a fire without a spark" implying that to move on, you need to take some sort of action which will begin with a spark - something that jump-starts their life.

The second-person reference "Hey there, baby" suggests that the singer is reaching out to someone for help. They are lonely and are seeking a connection with someone else, someone who might help them get out of the rut they are in. The themes of isolation and loneliness are repeated throughout the song. The verses describe the singer's sense of disconnect with the world around them, but the chorus provides a glimmer of hope as the singer talks about dancing in the dark with someone else. The repeated line "Even if we're just dancing in the dark" suggests that even the smallest amount of human connection can be a spark.

@Cleverconveyence

man a song about working your ass off every day doing the same passionless thing over and over again until you arent even sure who you are anymore, all while all your dreams rush past your aged stagnant anxious corpse, begging you to get out and live, do what fulfills you, sure does hit different rn

@armandogilio7935

By far, the best cover of this song... miles away from any other. It keeps the Guitar driven Born in the USA Springsteen's vibe but feels so fresh and unique at the same time. I have always considered the original Dancing in the dark my anthem, this cover is so close to it they might be siamese twins. Great job Lucy!
