Since their eponymous début EP, Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys (2014), the band has released a string of singles, EP and five studio albums, including three albums that are part of the so-called 'Tapes' series.
2023 saw the release of yet another EP, (Howl, in March), and a studio album: Heaving, in April. The latter album has been described as a "visceral, pulsing and intimate exploration of sound and story".
Beast
Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys Lyrics

So concerned with the patterns of the pretty one
Move like Dorothy my dear
Shoes of red and a heart of a fear
Moved in circles till you were in front of me
Trapped in you is just where I wanna be
Tell me does it stay the same
Beast stay hungry
Soul stay angry
Wild wild angels
Take me away
Out of the dust and into the clay
Trapped inside your thoughts of the pretty one
Racing backwards trying to find a little sun
But the days they pass so slow
And the moon so heavy when you’re on your own
I looked inside the life of a tired man
Trying to find his ride to the other side
But he gave up hope and he missed his chance
Now it breaks his heart to see Dorothy Dance
Beast stay hungry
Soul stay angry
Wild wild angels
Take me away
Out of the dust and into the clay
Beast stay hungry
Soul stay angry
Wild wild angels
Take me away
Out of the dust and into the clay
Wild wild angels
Take me away
Out of the dust and into the clay
The lyrics of "Beast" by Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys seem to speak of the struggle of identity in a world where one is often pushed towards conformity. The opening lines speak of growing to be just like the other one, indicating the pressure to blend in with the crowd. However, the following line "So concerned with the patterns of the pretty one" suggests that this conformity is only towards those who are considered "pretty" or popular, which often leads to a sense of insecurity.
The reference to "Move like Dorothy" and "Shoes of red and a heart of fear" can be interpreted as the singer's attempt to find her own identity amidst this chaos. The chorus speaks of the desire to break free from these patterns and let go of the fear that often comes with being different. The lines "Trapped in you is just where I wanna be/Tell me does it stay the same/Touching parts, playing games" suggest a relationship that is based on a mutual desire to break free from societal norms, but also raises questions about the stability of such a relationship.
The final lines of the song, "Wild wild angels/Take me away/Out of the dust and into the clay" can be interpreted as a plea to the world to break free from these patterns of conformity and be true to oneself, even if it means stepping away from the crowd.
