i promise that i'll write
i'll send you a postcard
i'll write every night
but i gotta leave
i gotta take flight
i gotta leave
i gotta take flight
in a former life, i baked you pies that you really liked
in a former life, i hung your clothes to dry the way you liked
the way you like the way you like the way you really really like
the way you like the way you like the way you really really like
but i'll never be the one to evaporate your nightmares
and i'll never be the one to climb up all those stairs
but i'll never be the one to be there
no, i'll never be the one to be there
in a former life, i built you a house with my own two hands
in a former life, i did my hair the way you like
the way you like the way you like the way you really really like
the way you like the way you like the way you really really like
but i'll never be the one to calm the raging seas
and i'll never be the one, so stop asking me please
so stop asking me please asking me please
in a former life, i got down on my hands and knees
and told you everything and told you everything
in a former life, i was really something really something
but i'll never be the one you really need
no, i'll never be the one you really need
The song 'Postcard' by Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles is about someone leaving the love of their life with a promise to stay in touch through letters. The lyrics express regret over not being able to fulfill their role in their partner's life as someone who can calm their fears, be their support system and fulfill their needs. The first verse talks about the promise to send a postcard and write every night but then acknowledges the departure that is necessary.
The second verse takes us back to a former life where the singer remembers doing things that pleased their partner. They reminisce about baking pies and hanging their clothes out to dry just the way their partner liked. The singer concludes that they will never be able to give their partner what they need the most - someone to calm their fears and be there for them when they need it the most.
The chorus repeats the phrase 'the way you really really like' multiple times emphasizing the closeness the two shared in their former life. However, the singer feels that they can never fill the void in their partner's life as someone who can provide emotional and mental support, even though they might have done things that their partner liked. The song ends with the realization that the singer can only do so much, and their partner will always need someone else to fulfill their needs.
