Fire Away
Lucy Schwartz Lyrics

Reading books with just pictures
I had dreams of many places
Never found out where they were
So fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
Fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
Leaving my only hometown
Father and mother will worry
But I’ve got to get lost to be found
So fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
Fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
With a heavy heart
And open arms
With a heavy heart
And open arms
I feel the wind at my footstep
Thunder inside of my bones
My legs come unfixed and they’re running
Chasing the timekeepers call
So fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
Fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
With a heavy heart
And open arms
With a heavy heart
And open arms
Fire away, fire away, fire away, fire
Lucy Schwartz’s “Fire Away” is a song about the pursuit of dreams and the sacrifices that come with it. The lyrics are simple yet powerful. The song begins with an image of a child tying their laces and reading books with just pictures, dreaming of many places without ever knowing where they were. This is followed by a call to action to “fire away” towards these dreams, no matter the cost. We then hear about a person leaving their hometown with two bags of books and a suitcase, knowing that their parents will worry but understanding that they need to get lost in order to be found.
The chorus repeats several times, emphasizing the importance of the journey towards the dream. The repetition of “fire away” serves as a reminder to push forward despite obstacles. Despite the sacrifices that are to be made and the heavy heart that this may bring, the persona in the song is committed to pursuing their dreams with open arms, and letting the journey lead them where it may. The song ends with a celebration of the freedom of chasing dreams, with the persona running towards their goal with all their might.
