I Know You

You leave me breathless
I know your every line, so well
But still I’m helpless
Watching you
Wanting you
I know you so well
Why don’t you come on free me
I know you
I know you so well
But you don’t see me
Anymore
There’s something in your eyes
Can’t tell, where I’ve seen it before
You’re wearing your disguise, so well
So why have I been
Watching you
Wanting you
I know you
I know you so well
Why don’t you come on free me
I know you
I know you so well
But you don’t see me
Anymore
Oh, Oh, Oh
Oh, Oh, Oh,
I know you
I know you so well
Why don’t you come on free me
I know you
I know you so well
But you don’t see me
I know you
I know you so well
Why don’t you come on free me
I know you
I know you so well
But you don’t see me
Anymore

Lucy Schwartz’s “I Know You” is a song about unrequited love. The singer expresses how she knows the person she is in love with so well that she can predict their every move and recite their every line. However, despite this deep understanding, the person does not reciprocate her feelings. The singer is left feeling helpless and trapped by her love for someone who does not see her.
The chorus is an appeal to the person she loves to see her for who she is and to set her free from her unrequited love. While the person may be wearing a “disguise,” the singer still sees through it and desires them deeply. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the singer’s desperation and longing for the person to notice her.
The song is characterized by its dreamy and ethereal sound, with the instrumentation starting with a prominent piano and building to an orchestral section in the chorus. The use of repetition and the haunting melody convey the singer’s obsessive love and the pain that comes from not being seen. The lyrics and melody complement each other to create a bittersweet ballad that captures the all-consuming nature of unrequited love.
