Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
At the masquerade
Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
Wear your jeweled crown
And they can’t touch you now
They won’t see your eyes, crying
Wear your jeweled crown
Bought the finer things
You’re still lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
Tied to the loveless king
How you’re lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
Wear your jeweled crown
And they can’t touch you now
Place you throne so high
They won’t see your eyes, crying
Wear your jeweled crown
Here comes the flood
And they want blood
Take your bow
Wear your jeweled crown
And they can’t touch you now
Place you throne so high
And they won’t see your eyes, crying
Wear your jeweled crown
The song "Marie Antoinette" by Lucy Schwartz embodies the life of the famous historical figure from which it derives its name. The lyrics reflect on the ways in which Antoinette tried to mask her loneliness and sadness with material possessions, famously exaggerated by the phrase "Let them eat cake." Schwartz shines a light on these attempts at hiding true emotions and the ultimate downfall that is inevitable when one is hiding behind a facade.
The repeated phrase "lonely, lonely, lonely" emphasizes the isolation and loneliness Antoinette feels despite her wealth and power. The line "wear your jeweled crown, and they can't touch you now" speaks to Antoinette's use of her royal status to try and shield herself from the scrutiny and judgment of her subjects. The line "they won't see your eyes crying" implies that while Antoinette may appear to have everything she could want, there are deep emotions bubbling beneath the surface that only she can see.
The final verse, starting with "here comes the flood," represents the eventual uprising of the people against Antoinette and the French monarchy. The line "they want blood" speaks to the violence and aggression that ultimately led to her execution. The repeated refrain of "wear your jeweled crown" throughout the song drives home the idea that even with all of her material possessions and power, Antoinette could not escape her ultimate fate.
