Morning
Lucy Schwartz Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Drown, out the weeping sound of morning
Morning comes
In waves of sorrow
Somber as the day that follows
Still morning comes
Catch, and release it in your fingers
Then let go
Morning comes
In waves of sorrow
Somber as the day that follows
Still morning comes
And I'll never forget you dear
When the sun appears
You'll be my light
And though it wasn't said my dear
Every moment here
You'll be my life
Morning comes
In waves of sorrow
Somber as the day that follows
Still morning comes
So sing, silent sparrow of the morning
Lucy Schwartz's song Porcelain is a poignant meditation on grief and loss. The lyrics begin with an invocation to a "silent sparrow of the morning," encouraging the bird to sing and to drown out the sounds of weeping. This reflects the singer's desire to find solace in the natural world, to be comforted by the soothing sounds of birdsong. The repetition of the phrase "morning comes" underscores the cyclical nature of grief, and the idea that even though the pain may ebb and flow, it is always present. The line "somber as the day that follows" suggests that the singer is dealing with a recent loss, and that the heaviness of grief is still weighing on them.

Morning comes
The start of a new day arrives
In waves of sorrow
Bringing feelings of sadness

Release your hold on the sadness and allow it to pass

When the daylight arrives
You'll be my light
You will be the one who brightens my day

Even though these words were not spoken, my darling
Every moment here
Every single second spent together
You'll be my life
You are the one who gives my existence meaning
So sing, silent sparrow of the morning
Sing on, sweet bird who starts the day quietly
