Stormy Weather
Luis Arcaraz & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't know why
There's no sun up in the sky
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time

Life is bare
Gloom and misery everywhere
Stormy weather
Just can't get my poor self together
I'm weary all the time, the time
So weary all the time

When he went away, the blues walked in and met me
If he stays away, old rocking chair will get me
All I do is pray the Lord above will let me
Walk in the sun once more

Can't go on
All I have in life is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together
Keeps rainin' all the time
Keeps rainin' all the time

I walk around, heavy-hearted and sad
Night comes around, I'm still feelin' bad
Rain pourin' down, blindin' every hope I had
This pitterin', patterin', beatin' and spatterin' drives me mad
Love, love, love, love
This misery is just too much for me

Can't go on
Everything I had is gone
Stormy weather
Since my man and I ain't together

Keeps rainin' all the time
Keeps rainin' all the time

Overall Meaning

The song "Stormy Weather" by Luis Arcaraz & His Orchestra is a poignant reflection on heartbreak and the emotional turmoil that follows a breakup. The lyrics convey a sense of hopelessness and despair that arises from the separation from a loved one, as the absence of this person creates a "stormy weather" that seemingly persists indefinitely. The opening lyrics, "Don't know why/ There's no sun up in the sky/ Stormy weather/ Since my man and I ain't together/ Keeps rainin' all the time," set the tone for the rest of the song. The metaphor of a storm is used to symbolize the emotional turmoil brought on by the separation, and the repetition of the refrain, "Keeps rainin' all the time," emphasizes the feeling of being trapped in a state of perpetual sadness.

The second verse goes on to describe the feelings of lethargy and helplessness that result from heartbreak, with the lines "Life is bare/ Gloom and misery everywhere/ Stormy weather/ Just can't get my poor self together/ I'm weary all the time, the time/So weary all the time." Here, the singer expresses feelings of depression and a sense of being unable to pick themselves up and move forward without their partner. The bridge section of the song adds a layer of poignant nostalgia, as the singer recalls happier times with their partner and expresses a longing to return to those moments. Ultimately, the song strikes a melancholic chord, with the final refrain "Keeps rainin' all the time" ringing out as a final statement of resignation.
