The lyrics of Luis Perez Meza's song "El Gavilan Pollero" tell the story of a man who has lost his favorite hen to a predatory hawk. The man laments the loss of his beloved "polla," or hen, and begs the cantinero, or bartender, for another drink to numb the pain. He addresses the gavilan, or hawk, directly, begging it to return his hen to him. In exchange for the hen's safe return, the man offers to give the hawk his entire gallinero, or chicken coop.
The song is essentially a lament for a lost love. The man's passionate plea for his hen's return is reminiscent of a lover's desperate cries for the return of a beloved partner. The metaphor of the hawk as a lover who has taken away what the man holds dearest is a poignant one, and the repetition of the refrain only emphasizes the man's sense of loss and desperation.
