He joined the army at the age of 16. When he left the army, he met a young man named Abila, who was the only one throughout the region played the guitar. Abila taught Vargas to play the guitar that his mother had bought him.
Like many musicians in his area, Vargas played merengue, the calabash, drum and accordion. These are the instruments used in the bachata, but Vargas introduced other elements, like playing the bongo with chopsticks instead of hands, and playing merengue rhythms. Vargas started recording bachata in 1982, but was not successful until the end of the decade, when he introduced his new style "guitar merengue."
A year later he recorded his first single, a 45 RPM that was what was used at that time. He sold his singles himself, going from record store to store.
Luis Vargas consolidated his career as a professional artist in the world of bachata, having to his credit more than 20 productions with other labels and, in mid-2001, launched the album " In Person ", the first with his new record label.
Luis Vargas's close friend, Anthony Santos has been very helpful in his career. However, after Vargas's career developed, so did the rivalry between them, to the point that Vargas challenged Santos to a music duel.
Vargas has been characterized by a disorganized personal life: the father of 7 children with different women who came to know in one of his concerts and never seen again.
In 2009 he said he would leave the Dominican Republic with his family to live in Miami, due to the crime in the DR. He also declared his sympathy with the PRD.
Esa Mujer

Esa mujer
Mi cuarto, mi carro, mi cama y mi radio
Oh lleno de recuerdos todo ella lo dejó
Y hoy se ha marchado
Dejando una duda
No sé si me quiso
Si me traicionó
Como me contó
El que presenció
Que otro llegó
De un pueblo lejano buscandola a ella
Pero así pasó
Pero a esa mujer (la borraré)
No sé con qué
Si con gasolina, o papel de lija
O tine o gasoil
Pero a esa mujer yo la borraré
A esa mujer
La borraré
De noche tengo insomnio
No puedo dormir
Yo siento su voz, su cuerpo caliente
Su voz que me dice papi ven paca
Papi echa paca
papi ven a bañarte
Pero a esa mujer yo la borraré
A esa mujer, la borraré
(Requinto awesomness)
A esa mujer, la borraré
la borraré
De noche tengo insomnio
No puedo dormir
Yo siento su voz, su cuerpo caliente
Su voz que me dice papi ven paca
Papi ven a comer
papi ven a bañarte
(Pero a esa mujer la borraré)
De mi pensamiento (la borraré)
De mi vida (la borraré)
De mi cuerpo (la borraré)
De mi gente (la borraré)
De mi amor(la borraré)
De mi existencia(la borraré)
A esa mujer, yo la borraré
(ay ay ay ay ay)
La borraré, La borraré...
The song "Esa Mujer" by Luis Vargas talks about a woman that the singer had met at some point in the past. The first part of the song goes into detail about how the singer met this woman and how she had made him feel alive again. He talks about how he had seen her as a mother to a child and how he had found her to be attractive and loveable. The singer describes her appearance as having a small stature, curly hair, and an adorable body. He speaks of how she had made him feel as though there was still time left and that everything that he had experienced before this encounter was only a reflection of what was to come.
The song takes a deep turn as the singer goes into the second half of the song. He talks about how this same woman had left him and how he feels that she didn't love him as much as he loved her. He experienced insomnia every night and could still hear her voice in his head. The singer mentions that he is going to erase her from his thoughts, his life, his body, his people, his love, and his existence. The singer uses phrases such as "la borraré" to express how he plans to get rid of the memories of her. The end of the song, including the requinto, serves as a final declaration that he will erase her from his life completely.
