Play It Again
Luke Bryan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She was sittin' all alone over on the tailgate
Tan legs swingin' by a Georgia plate
I was lookin' for her boyfriend
Thinkin', "No way she ain't got one"
Soon as I sat down, I was fallin' in love
Tryin' to pour a little sugar in her Dixie cup
Talkin' over the speakers in the back of that truck
She jumped up and cut me off

She was like, "Oh my God, this is my song
I've been listenin' to the radio all night long
Sittin' 'round waitin' for it to come on and here it is"
She was like, "Come here boy, I wanna dance"
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' me around 'til it faded out
And she gave me a kiss
And she said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"
And I said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"

I'd have gave that DJ my last dime
If he would've played it just one more time
But a little while later
We were sittin' in the drive in my truck
Before I walked her to the door, I was scannin' like a fool
AM, FM, XM, too
But I stopped real quick when I heard that groove
Man, you should've seen her light up

She was like, "Oh my God, this is my song
We've been listenin' to the radio all night long
I can't believe that it came back on, but here it is"
She was like, "Come here boy, I wanna dance"
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' in the headlights, she gave me a goodnight kiss
And I said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"
And she said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"

The next Friday night we were sittin' out under the stars
You should've seen her smile when I broke out my guitar

She was like, "Oh my God, this is my song
I've been listenin' to the radio all night long
Sittin' 'round waitin' for it to come on and here it is"
She was like, "Come here boy, I wanna dance"
'Fore I said a word, she was takin' my hand
Spinnin' in the headlights, she gave me a goodnight kiss
And she said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"
And I said, "Play it again, play it again, play it again"

Yeah, play it again, play it again, play it again
Somebody play it again, play it again, play it again

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Luke Bryan's "Play It Again" tell the story of a chance encounter that turns into a serendipitous romance. The singer, in search of the girl's boyfriend, finds himself smitten with her as soon as he sees her swinging her legs by a Georgia plate. As they strike up a conversation, Bryan's character tries to catch her attention by pouring a little sugar in her Dixie cup, but just as they start hitting it off, the girl jumps up and cuts him off, saying, "this is my song".

The rest of the song celebrates the magic of how music brings people together. Every time the song comes on the radio, they're transported back to that moment under the stars, holding hands and dancing together. They keep asking the DJ to play it again and bask in the happiness and nostalgia the song brings. It's a reminder that even the small moments, like dancing to a favorite song on the radio or strumming a guitar under the stars, can create lifelong memories.

I have came to a conclusion, that this song is most defininetly in fact worth playing again

@faeriefire78

I'm not a country fan, except for maybe a few artists and some really old stuff. But I heard this song for the first time tonight in Walgreens and was instantly in love. Sometimes a song will hit you just right and an entire story with all the feelings associated will just pour over you. This was like that. ๐Ÿ’–

Same, except I worked at Walgreens and they played it at least twice a day during my shift. I had to Google the lyrics because it sounds so good. Now I LOVE this song

Keep in mind most of the artists are performers and there is a whole crew of talented writers out there. Luke's got that unique voice that you can't replicate and he takes the words and makes you feel them.

Lukes songs never fall out of my life's list of great country songs.๐Ÿ˜Š

This song is so nostalgic for me, every time I hear it Iโ€™m instantly brought back to 7 years old, running around in the dark near a campfire, the radio on, squealing and giggling, spinning in the headlights of our truck along with the song.
