If
Luke Conard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I would have read between the lines
If I could have understood the signs
Would I now see the stars align?

If I would have walked through that door
If I could have known this before
Would we be living on cloud 9?
I wonder if
I could do it all over again?
Went back to where all of this begins
Would everything be different
Or would I do it all again?

If I would have walked through that door
If I could have known this before
Would we be living on cloud 9?

I wonder if
I could do it all over again?
Went back to where all of this begins
Would everything be different
Or would I do it all again?

I wonder if the ghosts of time
Would show me that it's a wonderful life
And I shouldn't change a single thing

I wonder if
I could do it all over again?
Went back to where all of this begins

Would everything be different
Or would I do it all again?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Luke Conard’s song “If” explore the concept of regret and the idea of wishing we could go back in time to make different choices. The lines “If I would have read between the lines / If I could have understood the signs / Would I now see the stars align?” suggest that the singer failed to recognize important information or signs that could have led to a better outcome. The song then asks the question, “If I could do it all over again?”, indicating the singer’s desire to make different choices and avoid regrets.

The following lines, “Would everything be different / Or would I do it all again?” show the internal conflict and uncertainty the singer is experiencing about the hypothetical do-over. The repetition of “If I would have walked through that door / If I could have known this before” emphasizes the singer’s lingering sense of missed opportunity or mistake.

The chorus, “I wonder if / I could do it all over again? / Went back to where all of this begins / Would everything be different / Or would I do it all again?" highlights the remorse and contemplation that the singer is experiencing, culminating in the final lines that suggest he is considering acceptance: “I wonder if the ghosts of time / Would show me that it's a wonderful life / And I shouldn't change a single thing”.

The first time I watched this, I couldn't go pass 30sec of it bc this video was released after my grandmother's death. Several months later, I wanted to hear it and watch it, but everything in this video, from beginning to end really relates to me and made me feel too much pain. From when my grandmother was sick, yet smiling to missing all my mom's phone calls since I was away for my church's retreat. Just seeing her deteriorating so quickly, just like this video, it all happened so fast. Luke, you are heaven's sent, please and always make music. Its beautiful.
