The Runaround
Luke Wade Lyrics

Help me understand
Why I keep on playin' this part
Got me spendin' all your money
Beggin' for your honey
Tell me why we're only this far

You've got to give the runaround
To make that candy taste so sweet
You've got to give the runaround
To let them know there's nothing for free

Help me understand
What it takes for me to be your man
So, you took me to your place
Gave me a little taste
When you said you'd have me screaming amen

You've got to give the runaround
To make that candy taste so sweet
You've got to give the runaround
To let them know there's nothing for free
But when you give me the runaround
The best thing that you could've had
Might just up and leave

Oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh

Baby I'm a man
And it means I'm gonna get what I need
So please give that act a rest
You know you don't need that dress
Why don't you let it slip on down to your feet

You've got to give the runaround
To make that candy taste so sweet
You've got to give the runaround
To let them know there's nothing for free
But when you give me the runaround
The best thing that you could have had
Might up and leave

Help me understand why I keep on playin' this part

Overall Meaning

The song "The Runaround" by Luke Wade talks about the struggles of being in a relationship where one person is constantly giving the other person the "runaround." The singer is puzzled by why he keeps playing this part, spending all his money and begging for her attention while getting nothing in return. He questions what it takes for him to be her man, and she gives him a taste of what he wants to hear but never delivers. The lyrics are calling out the manipulative behavior of someone who gives false promises, leading the partner on with the hope of a happy ending but never delivering on their word.

The chorus says, "You've got to give the runaround to make that candy taste so sweet, to let them know there's nothing for free." This line talks about the idea that withholding something desired could make it more attractive, making the other person work hard to achieve it. This could refer to emotions, love, or material things. The next part of the chorus warns that when you give someone the runaround, the best thing you could have had might up and leave. This serves as a warning to the manipulative partner, suggesting that keeping people on edge will eventually make them seek happiness elsewhere.

In summary, "The Runaround" is a cautionary tale about manipulative relationships that use false hope and empty promises to keep the other person interested. It is about understanding the futility of endlessly chasing someone who is not willing to reciprocate.

Like Luke's dad said on the preview, "That's my boy!" - beaming with pride. Well, that's my boy, Philip. And he is indeed something special, too. As is his gorgeous partner, Sam. This is going to be a fun season on The Voice!!
