I Don't Wanna Fight
Lulu Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a pale moon in the sky
The kind you make your wishes on
Oh, like the light in your eyes
The one I built my dreams upon
It's not there any longer
Something happened somewhere and we both know why
But me, I'm getting stronger
We must stop pretending
I can't live this life

I don't care who's wrong or right
I don't really want to fight no more (too much talking babe)
Let's sleep on it tonight
I don't really want to fight no more
This is time for letting go

I hear a whisper in the air
It simply doesn't bother me
Oh, can't you see that I don't care
Or are you you looking right through me
It seems to me that lately
You look at me the wrong way and I start to cry
Could it be that maybe
This crazy situation is the reason why

I don't care who's wrong or right
I don't really want to fight no more (too much talking babe)
Let's sleep on it tonight
I don't really want to fight no more (tired of all these games)
But baby, don't you know
That I don't want to hurt no more (it's time, I'm walking, babe)
Don't care now who's to blame
I don't really want to fight no more
This is time for letting go

Hanging on to the past
It only stands in our way
We had to grow for our love to last
But we just grew apart
No, I don't want to hurt no more

But baby, don't you know
No, I don't want to hurt no more (too much talking, babe)
So let's sleep on it tonight
I don't really want to fight no more
This is time for letting go
No, I don't want to hurt no more (too much, hey baby)
Don't care now who's to blame

I don't really want to fight no more
'Cause it's time for letting go

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lulu's "I Don't Wanna Fight" depict a relationship that has deteriorated to the point of no return. The first stanza speaks of a pale moon in the sky- a symbol for wishes and dreams-a reference to the love that existed between the two lovers. There is an acknowledgment that something happened, which has made it impossible for them to continue living the way they have been. Lulu points out that the situation they find themselves in has them pretending, and it's time to face reality. The singer says it is time to let go- she is tired of the fighting and is ready to move on.

The second verse speaks of a whisper in the air- possibly an indication that it is time to change. There is an element of failure in the relationship, as Lulu talks about growth and how it could not stop their love from dying. She speaks from a place of hurt and recognizes that it is time to let go of the past and move on. The chorus reinforces her need to stop fighting and the importance of letting go.

The overall message of the song is clear- a relationship that has run its course. Lulu's choice of words creates a sense of finality- the lovers have gone as far as they could, and it's time to move away from the pain and disappointment. Sometimes couples have to face the harsh reality that they are no longer happy together, and it is better to move on instead of pretending.

I never realised Lulu wrote this wonderful song, one of my favourite songs performed by Tina Turner

This has made me really happy seeing this. I was the lighting operator for this series. Lulu has always been one of my favourite singers, I also had the pleasure of lighting her a couple of years ago on Jools’ Annual Hootenanny, two shows 21 years apart. 😅

@HiddenAura1

I love her version of this. Still blows my mind she wrote this.

Love this and thankful the song was sent to Tina as it seemed to tell the story of her life so well! Great stuff!

@getreal6978

At 70 plus still got it. I remember her as a kid.

@MarthaMansbridge

She wasn't 70 in this - she was 52 - younger than Kylie, Madonna, JLo, Mariah...are today with global sellout tours and music. She made a good choice giving this song to Turner, at least she made a modest amount of money from it than if she'd peddled this herself...
