Cups
Lulu and the Lampshades Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've had enough
Time to fill your cup
Your heart's not in it
And you're craving something deeper
But every time you try to leave
Your old life comes haunting you
It's a lost cause you figure
Toxicity just falls like leaves
There's nothing that you have to do
You see the big picture
You've had enough
Time to fill your cup
You've had enough
Time to fill your cup
You've had enough
Time to fill your cup

You've had enough
Time to fill your cup

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Cups" by Lulu and the Lampshades speak to the idea of wanting more in life and realizing that you need to move on from toxic relationships or situations. The repeated line "you've had enough, time to fill your cup" serves as a mantra for the listener to take control of their own happiness and well-being.

The first verse suggests that the singer is feeling unfulfilled and recognizes that they need something more meaningful in their life. However, they struggle to move on from their current situation because their past is holding them back. The second verse reinforces this idea, describing the toxicity of the past as falling like leaves and acknowledging that it's a lost cause to try and change it.

The song ultimately serves as an uplifting reminder that it's never too late to make a change and take control of your life. By filling up your own cup, you can find the inner strength to move past the things that are holding you back.

Its so sad everyone thinks this started in Pitch Perfect when you two really started.

@TheArdeleannicole

True story bro (y) :D

@ibtiamat

Actually even Lulu and the Lampshades didn't even start it.  They got it from J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers, a bluegrass band back in the late 30s.

@TheArdeleannicole

really? :O

@kirram5245

Beth Buchanan But they were the first to combine the cup game and the song from the 30s.

Kirra McColl FUN FACT! It's in Pitch Perfect BECAUSE of this specific video. Anna Kendrick spent hours watching this video on Reddit learning it and then while filming Pitch Perfect she was like "I can do this...?" and they loved it and put it in the film.
An interview where Anna tells this to a talk show host (I can't remember which one, there's too many) went around tumblr a while after the film was released.

Anna Kendrick watched this video so many times to learn it ....she said it on an interview. She loved it and wanted it to be part of pitch perfect that's why it was added as her audition
