Even the brightest, most upbeat Luna Shadows song carries a hint of romantic melancholy. She describes her artistic ambitions as a lifelong dare that, “sounded pretty fun” and brought order to the emotional chaos of everyday life. The end product, made in garages and bedrooms under the palm trees of Echo Park, sounds a bit like Ellie Goulding took Lana del Rey to the beach.

Everybody knows it
Your voice is like a gun
Every word is loaded, baby
And yet the ones you love
See behind the curtain (see behind the curtain)
You try to shut me up
I wait for the explosion
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
Break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
Break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
I read you like a book
Everybody knows it (everybody knows it)
Hardly have to look
Not much there for learning, baby
And yet the pages turn
How do we interpret
The end before it hits?
Maybe we should burn it
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
Break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
Break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
You devastate like hurricanes
And all you have to do is leave the room
You break me down to lowercase
The capitals you take for only you
The song "lowercase" by Luna Shadows explores the destructive power of someone's words and actions on an individual. The opening lines, "You got a way with words/Everybody knows it" immediately suggest that the subject at hand possesses an innate ability to use language in a way that affects people deeply. The following line, "Your voice is like a gun/Every word is loaded, baby," further emphasizes the notion that the subject's words carry immense power and can be weaponized. It is clear that the singer is on the receiving end of these devastating words as the lyrics continue, "You devastate like hurricanes/And all you have to do is leave the room/You break me down to lowercase/The capitals you take for only you." The metaphor of a hurricane reinforces how destructive the subject's words can be, and how their impact is lingering even after they have left.
Despite this, the singer is not entirely helpless, as shown in the lines "You try to shut me up/I wait for the explosion." Here, the singer is waiting for an outburst of emotion, a resistance against the subject's power, indicating that there is still some fight left in them. The chorus repeats this idea that the subject breaks the singer down into something smaller and less significant, and that this is done purposefully by them. The bridge, "I read you like a book/Everybody knows it/Hardly have to look/Not much there for learning, baby/And yet the pages turn/How do we interpret/The end before it hits?/Maybe we should burn it," suggests that the subject's motivations are transparent and that they are fully aware of their own actions.
Overall, "lowercase" is a poignant song about how words and actions can wound and maim a person. It is a call to acknowledge the power dynamics that exist in every relationship, and to be vigilant about how one treats others.

The video is a juxtaposition of my life on the east side of Los Angeles and our collective experiences as digital natives. The voyeuristic pixelated 'others' symbolize followers (or unfollowers): digital presences dressed in shades of blue to represent the glow of a computer screen. The choreography/movement mimics the digital movements we see everyday: glitching, buffering, and taking forever to load. Like the old adage says: 'dance like your internet connection keeps cutting out. <3
