(Ayy, man, turn that up)
I'm not tryin' to be no legend, I'm not a rapper
Just good with words, just want my flowers
The ashwagandha to calm my nerves
I put in hour after hours before the deal
Back when it was just me, Ry, Jimmy and Will
I've been livin' in my truth since 2012
I've been spittin' in the booth since Nine was Milly Mill
Yellin', "Free my nigga Preston," like, Lupe and Chilly Chill
It was C-I double A, Cole mans and Miguel
I was backstage like I'm just a cashier
If I play my cards right, maybe this my last year
Even though it took five, hail a nigga right here, yeah
I don't take nothin' for granted
You reap what you sow when you plantin'
Some days I just don't have the answer, but my feet, they solid
They plan it 'cause this shit outstanding
You can't tell me how to feel, this shit my life
I can tell you this ain't happen overnight
When you ain't got shit to lose, hmm, got to roll the dice
I ain't got nothin' to prove, hmm, this ain't no overnight
You can't tell me how to feel, this shit my life
I can tell you this ain't happen overnight
When you ain't got shit to lose, hmm, got to roll the dice
I ain't got nothin' to prove, hmm, this ain't no overnight
I used to be so naïve in the beginning
The first that I got
The more I realize shit different
The pockets you watch
You should be paid on commission
This was my call and my intuition
Had to let go of the time and the whole for wishin'
Watch my life unfold, like what a feelin'
Some days I be unapologetic
Some days I understand you won't get it
Never take it wrong when I'm dissin'
I've been workin' on myself for a minute
Hate when people say they want a part of me
But can't accept the me that I give 'em
My daughter gettin' older, so I'm livin'
If I could, I wouldn't do it any different
Money be the goal, not the mission
I hope that when you get older
You understand all the shit that I have sacrificed
Despite how they feel, I did all I could do
Just for you so that you have a better life
You can't tell me how to feel, this shit my life
I can't tell you this ain't happen overnight
When you ain't got shit to lose, hmm, got to roll the dice
I ain't got nothin' to prove, hmm, this ain't no overnight
You can't tell me how to feel, this shit my life
I can't tell you this ain't happen overnight
When you ain't got shit to lose, hmm, got to roll the dice
I ain't got nothin' to prove, hmm, this ain't no overnight
In "Overnight," Lute discusses his journey in the music industry and the hard work he put in to get to where he is. He begins by stating that he's not trying to be a legend since he's not a rapper, but he's just good with words and wants recognition for his work. He mentions using ashwagandha to calm his nerves and how he spent hours upon hours perfecting his craft before the deal. He reminisces about the times when it was just him, Ry, Jimmy, and Will, and they used to tip the scale at the dojo.
Lute mentions that he's been living in his truth since 2012 and has been spitting in the booth since the days of Milli Mill, yelling "Free my nigga Preston" like Lupe and Chilly Chill. He then references his time at C-I double A and backstage, where he felt like he was just a cashier. Nevertheless, he believes that if he plays his cards right, this might be his last year, and he's grateful for everything that's happened so far.
In the second verse, Lute talks about how he used to be naive and didn't understand how the industry works. As he got more involved, he realized that things were different and that he had to be paid on commission. He mentions that he had to let go of certain things to pursue his passion, and now he's watching his life unfold. He admits that some days he's unapologetic, while some days he can understand that people won't get it. He also expresses his love for his daughter and how he hopes she understands the sacrifices he has made for her.
Overall, "Overnight" is a reflection of Lute's journey in the music industry, and proves that success does not come overnight but requires hard work, dedication and self-awareness.
