It Hurts Me Too
Luther Allison Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say you hurting, almost lost your mind
And the man you got now, mistreat you all the time
When things go wrong, go wrong with you, it hurt me too

You love him more, when you should love him less
While I won't stand, to see you take all of his mess
When things go wrong, go wrong with you, babe it hurt me too
Quit him now, before he put you down
Maybe I won't be there, when the tears start falling down
When things go wrong, go wrong with you, you see it hurt me too

He loving another woman, I love you
But you stick with him, just like super glue
When things go wrong, go wrong with you
O let me tell ya, it hurt me too
Alright baby

So I guess we got to say it now
We gotta go
It hurt me too

If you havin' a good time with Luther Allison let me hear you say yeah

Once again Luther Allison, how bout it, the soul fixin' man
Luther Allison, and the Memphis Horns, how bout it for'em

Luther Allison, one more time, Luther Allison, how bout it for'em
Yeah good night everybody

Overall Meaning

Luther Allison's "It Hurts Me Too" is a song about unrequited love and the pain that comes with seeing someone you care about continually choosing to be with someone who mistreats them. The singer of the song is in love with someone who is in love with someone else. The singer is frustrated, because they see the love of their life being mistreated and taken for granted. They urge the person they care about to leave their current partner before they get hurt any further. The singer is sympathetic but also frustrated with their lover, who continues to choose the wrong person. Although the singer is hurting, they can't help but love the person who doesn't love them back.

In addition to the emotional content of the lyrics, "It Hurts Me Too" is notable for its use of the "it hurt me too" refrain, which helps emphasize the pain the singer is feeling. Luther Allison's powerful, raspy voice lends an emotional intensity to the lyrics that is hard to miss. The song is primarily a blues ballad, with Allison's electric guitar solos interspersed throughout the track. The use of the Memphis Horns adds a soulful element to the song, further highlighting the emotional depth of the lyrics.

@bluesque9687

I guess thats cos he sounds like b b king a lot... kinda gets shadowed

@tracyjungmann1756

Maybe he was underrated, but not by me. I love his music.

@badger519

Damn right!!!

@KingKull1971

@bluesque I disagree, he sounds like a carbon copy of Elmore James. Guitar playing, voice and all. It's not a bad thing, but when you sound that much like someone else it tends to disqualify you from being considered one of the greats. Don't get me wrong, Luther Allison is great. He's just not all that original. But that's OK his music is enjoyable anyway 👍🏼

This will always be one of my all time cherished moments by the unrivaled great blues guitarist, Luther Allison. He is saying goodbye. Literally. He passed with in days of this Montreal recording. Great, great, great bluesman. Rest In Peace, brother.
