This Strange Feeling
Luther Vandross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey, look at me, uncompromising me
Not the least bit affected
By the love that anyone else gives
Hey, look at me, untouchable me
Can't even be reached
Until you come around and then

This strange feeling takes me over
Leaving me weak until you're out of view
And I can't see your face anymore

Lazy, sometimes I'm lazy, baby
Sitting in my easy chair
I find satisfaction there
Whenever you look my way
Everything changes and then

This strange feeling takes me over

Leaving me weak until you're out of view
And I can't see your face anymore

Overall Meaning

In "This Strange Feeling," Luther Vandross sings about being an individualistic and untouchable person who is resistant to love and influence from others. He sings, “Hey, look at me, uncompromising me / Not the least bit affected / By the love that anyone else gives.” He portrays himself as someone who can't be approached until a certain person comes into his life and changes everything. He describes an uncontrollable feeling that takes over him when he sees this person, causing him to feel weak and helpless until they are out of view. This feeling is so powerful that it affects his productivity as he becomes lazy, spending time in his easy chair, finding satisfaction in merely being looked at by this person. This strange feeling that he experiences is both powerful and confusing for him.

The song's lyrics showcase how love can break down a person's protective walls and change their behavior completely. It reveals how the love of another person can change a person's perspective and how it can make them feel weak, powerless, and exposed.

I like the sound of Luther singing in his 'morning voice'. It has more depth and presence. I hear this sound on his debut album 'Never Too Much' also. Wish this record was available for download.

This song could have been interpreted many ways... singing about different people, singing about each other... perhaps an awakening of stirring emotions of same sex romance... who knows... there is no gender pronouns in the song... Luther performed for change a group that made songs about gay romance in subtle, hint ways... like Glow of love and a couple of others. Whatever they were singing to, it is a wonderful duet...
