Dragging Your Feet in the Mud
Lydia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You're dragging your feet in the mud
So your shoes are stained with blood
I wonder, when will she get here?

One by one they will fall
But you grind your teeth 'til they're raw
I wonder, does it get any better?
We'll be up in the desert
Wearing these proud new sunburns
We're on our own time now
Don't you ever look back down

She's nowhere to be found
I'm pulling my hair out my scalp
When I realize
Who would've thought I

Sing one song for this girl
Wherever she is in this world
Hopes you'll realize, now or the next life

We'll be up in the desert
Wearing these proud new sunburns
We're on our own time now
Don't you ever look back down

We'll be up in the desert
Wearin' proud, these sunburns
We're on our own time now
Don't you dare look back down

Yeah don't ever say you have it
Thinking like that can be tragic
So let me take it from the start
And how you fell apart

Yeah how it all went from perfect
To throw it all in, let's burn it
So take what you need
I'm going back to those palm trees

Yeah I guess I finally feel like I deserved it
And I gotta make a point, no I gotta make it worth it
Cause if it happened, it happened, you know
You can't change that, that shit'll eat you alive
Gotta let it go, man

Yeah, we'll be up in the desert
Wearin proud, these sunburns
We're on our own time
Don't you dare, don't you dare

We'll be up in the desert
Wearing these proud new sunburns
We're on our own time now
Don't you ever look back down

We'll be up in the desert
Wearin proud, these sunburns

We're on our own time now
Don't you dare look back down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lydia's song "Dragging Your Feet in the Mud" seem to describe someone who may be going through a tough time, feeling lost and unsure of themselves. The first verse talks about someone who seems to be procrastinating, going through the motions while everyone around them is progressing. "One by one they will fall, but you grind your teeth 'til they're raw." From this, we can infer that the person the singer is talking about is dealing with some sort of internal struggle, perhaps with motivation or direction. However, the chorus of the song takes a more hopeful tone - "We'll be up in the desert wearing these proud new sunburns, we're on our own time now. Don't you ever look back down." This seems to suggest that whatever problems the person had been facing before, they are now taking charge of their own life and following their own path.

The second verse talks about the singer's frustration in trying to find someone - "She's nowhere to be found, I'm pulling my hair out my scalp." The third verse switches back to a more positive attitude, with the singer dedicating a song to the person they were looking for earlier - "Sing one song for this girl, wherever she is in this world. Hopes you'll realize, now or the next life." The final verse of the song seems to solidify the theme of taking control of one's own life - "Yeah I guess I finally feel like I deserved it, and I gotta make a point, no I gotta make it worth it."

Overall, "Dragging Your Feet in the Mud" is a song about the struggles of uncertainty and procrastination, but also hope for the future and taking control of one's own life.

If I must say so as my own opinion, new "Lydia" is just as damn good as it was back in 2008 with "Illuminate." Kudas to Leighton and Craig for keeping the band alive!

I saw Lydia in Austin, Tx Fri. Oct 7th. I'm loving their new cd. Leighton was so sweet to sign my daughters Lydia art painted Toms. And had our pic made with him. He seems a little shy. Doesn't seem to have an ego like a lot of lead singers. God I wish I could go to Dallas to see them again tonight! Last show in Texas!

I was there too!! New Haven, right? And I completely agree--they were so amazing, and really nice even after the show (at least they all stuck around, unlike Arkell, which, while understandable (I'm sure they were tired) I was disappointed about, I really liked them...). And when they came out with The Maine for the Beetles cover? Amazinggg
