THE ROAD
Lydia Ainsworth Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Channeling a velvet smile
It's all I can take with me
I turn to wipe the windows clean
In reverse it all feels so free
The dust is getting thicker
The light is getting dimmer
Did I have to let this go?
I remember
I remember

Now I'm driving down this open palm
Burning up the back of my hand
Tracing all the things I never did
All the things that I never said

As a hawk's deflected path
Meets the end within another end
As two mirrors guide the form
Let's go on and on, and on once more
When there's nothing left to break
In a gaze within another gaze
Bending backwards through soft eyes
Let's go on and on, and on next time

I couldn't take the long way home
Guess that I was frightened
I thought that I could face this storm
I'm only good when sun is shining
Now there's thunder and there's lightning
Should I put it down to timing?
That I had to let this go

Do you regret it?
I regret it

Now I'm driving down this lonely road
There's no way that I can turn back
'Cause I know it hurt to see me go
There's no way that you'll take me back

Open sky with no landmark
Making progress and yet nothing's changing
As two mirrors guide the form
Let's go on and on and on once more
When there's nothing left to break
In a gaze within another gaze
Bending backwards through soft eyes
Let's go on and on and on next time

Let's go on, yeah
Let's go on and on and on next time (oh)

Let's go on
Let's go on and on and on next time (oh)

Overall Meaning

The song "The Road" by Lydia Ainsworth is an emotional and introspective piece that contemplates the decisions one makes in life. The singer whisks through the world trying to leave behind what he or she used to have, but still bearing the internal struggles that come with refining oneself. In the first verse, the singer reflects on the fruitlessness of holding on to the past and the false belief that reversing our movements can rectify our mistakes. The act of looking back and wishing open up unwanted emotions, a realization the singer gets as he or she wipes the windows clean.

As the song progresses, the singer continues to travel down the open road, acknowledging the existence of mistakes he or she made in the past. The singer goes on to realize that despite the pain left behind by the storm of his or her past, he or she is still drawn to the idea of going back. In the third verse, the singer comes to the realization that while he or she may be moving forward, there's still a sense of standing still. This feeling is further amplified as the singer braves the open sky with no landmark. The singer comes to terms with the concept of breaking free from the past and starting anew, moving forward into the next chapter of his or her life.

Spotify recommended this to me over a year ago. It has found its way onto most of my playlists since then. This totally sounds like a lost Kingdom Hearts theme to me. Great song, thanks for creating this.
