I'd carry some guilt too if I were John. Not that I think John's a bad person or had bad intentions, but it was him who got Sid into the Pistols, and it was also him who pawned Sid off on Nancy, not knowing what kind of pandora's box would be sprung open from that. However, from what I understand Sid was already kind of predisposed towards a tragic lifestyle. Even if he had never joined the Pistols or met Nancy, he probably would have eventually ended up becoming a junkie, but it probably wouldn't have been such an accelerated process. I've had friends like Sid over the years, and sometimes I look back and think to myself "I wish there was more I could have done to help them"... but ultimately I wasn't responsible for the choices they made. If there's any one thing I have learned, it's that any time I see the warning signs in someone I care about, all I can do is let them know I'm there for them whenever they choose to seek help. I can't force help on anybody if they don't want it.

He and Sid used to go and get Mabel’s shopping for her. Mabel was an elderly lady who lived off Flask walk (Islington) in the same housing association flats that the lads did. Mabel lived on the third floor (4th to Americans) up the stone steps. Mabel who had watched the zeppelins bomb London in the First World War from those steps, always said what lovely boys they were. My sister was her next door neighbour. ♥️

I saw John Lydon at the Cheltenham Literature Festival yesterday and he is such a captivating speaker. Absolutely fascinating to listen to no matter what you think of him. I enjoyed every minute.

@Austin Reid Malcolm and Vivienne didn't orchestrate anything other than the fashion angle of punk, which meant MUCH less here in the U.S. than it did in England. Malcolm liked to think of himself as the great mastermind behind punk, but it was all a bunch of delusional piffle. All he did was sensationalize a movement that was already going to happen with or without his input. Personally I think most of the really negative aspects of punk came directly from him. Most people today know full well he was just full of shit.

I've kinda varied on my opinion of him because he does out on an act but I never doubted his wit (he was always funny) or his intelligence. I saw PIL live at Reading 92. They were good but the audience started chanting Johnny is a wanker. He replied 'the problem with you lot is you're afraid of your own tackle'. It's great to hear John Lyndon speaking of Sid. I do find it a bit annoying that the BBC are too happy to listen to John now when in the 70s/80s they would not give him the time of day and totally unsupportive of his new career in to PIL.

Well if the media had welcomed the Pistols (and punk in general) with open arms back then, then punk wouldn't have had the bite and the youth appeal that it did. The backlash from the establishment was all part of the appeal, as punk was born out of frustration with the status quo and MEANT to shake things up. I'd hardly call it 'annoying' that the media FINALLY embraced punk all these years later. It's a different generation now, and everything they've grown up on has been influenced or impacted in some way by the Pistols. It stands to reason that there's some respect to be paid.

Anger is an energy. Best autobiography I've read in a decade or more. Most engaging, well written, honest, emotional, funny. You feel like John is talking directly taking to you. You really feel him. He's one of those people that you either love or hate - no in-between. I haven't always agreed with everything he's said over the years, but never once did I fail to see his level of intelligence and wisdom. He's seen it all, from a very early age, and has always managed to best his detractors and win his battles, on his own terms. Love him or hate him, you have to respect that about him. He has definitely made the world a much more interesting place, even when he's pissed me off. The man makes you THINK... and that's never a bad thing.

I was thirteen as I watched that live Bill Grundy live interview of the sex pistols. Little did I know what a tonic they would be ahead. The working class and, in particular the youth had had enough of everything. The pistols put up a fcuk you v sign to the “rules” of privilege for some. They embarrassed the music business to the royals, great stuff. I just wish I’d been as brave as the guys.

I would like to add something that not many people realise about the Sex Pistols music. They were mocked as 3 chord wonders - couldn't play their instruments, terrible lyrics and couldn't sing. Damning stuff about a popular band.
I've been a guitarist for many years and some of their material is bordering on genius. Take Pretty Vacant for example. 4 chords (or more accurately 4 power chords) drums bass and the lead singer shouting the lyrics. A recipe for a terrible noise.

Not at all - the arpeggio of the A chord at the start was simple but brilliant bringing in great drums and the full A chord. Lydon's lyrics are very meaningful and delivered in his 'own' unique style (the rolling of the R's in the words adds to the listen-ability) The chord progression is simple but very effective and some of the guitar licks between are magical to play.

Make no mistake - this was an accomplished and talented band that wrote their own music and lyrics and performed them brilliantly. Part of their persona was to be obnoxious (they were kids) and people who didn't get them assumed they were thugs with no discernible intelligence. It really could have been the greatest rock n roll swindle. :)

I've loved all their songs since I first heard them in '77. I play guitar and still love them and agree with you. Solid songs with solid hooks and groove. Angry groove. Cook and Matlock are a badass combo (fuck Sid). Over the years I've played 'Anarchy', 'Submission', 'No Feelings', 'Pretty Vacant' (that droning intro is mesmerizing) and 'Seventeen'. I've never been a punk or heavily into punk rock. I just love great songs of any genre.

Even just something as "simple" as God Save the Queen or Anarchy in the UK contain some great moments.
For God Save the Queen extra strumming on the A5 chord or the way the simple solo hesitates between simple rock or blues and ends on a parting shot telling you "sit back the party's not over".
For Anarchy in the UK, while the tune is fairly simple, the use of flange (or phaser I'm never too sure) helps give it a "rolling" feeling and both lead parts, while simple, help set some kind of narrative progression. It might be a simple song to learn but it's a smart song to play properly. The first one is a proper solo that properly scales down back to the main riff, more or less landing on the first chord, while the second one is a kind of chorus and each one signifies a tone shift in the song, telling you how far we've gone in the story.
The Pistols said their first mistake was firing Glen Matlock because he was the most accomplished, almost only true musician (in a classical sense) of the band.
"Bodies" is another example, while simple and fast, you can hear how everything relies on the bassline and how the song is something between an endurance race and a roller coaster of buildups.
I'm not downplaying Steve Jones, but I'm pretty sure Glen brought many of those ideas, or at least sharpened them.
I still, to this day, hold "Never Mind the Bollocks" as an important album, not just for starting the punk fad, but also for teaching lot about simplicity, efficiency, and effectiveness in composing.
I still like complex stuff, but sometimes, simple and clean is the way to go, and the Pistols went that way.

Jones and Cook were great at what they did. It's too bad they didn't keep Matlock in the band, he was the best musician in the group and they traded him for the worst musician. Jones did well playing bass on recordings but the song writing came to a halt. When Glenn was still in the band Malcolm McLaren said "they were getting better all the time and I didn't think that was a good thing"... he sure fixed that by driving a wedge between Glenn and the band and bringing in Sid.

Which understates the talents of Jones, Matlock, and Cook.

Sex pistol or no, I think Sid would have ended up very much the same way anyway because of his mom. She's the one who shaped him at a core level, then there's the genetic component, too.. in that scene or around his mom, he could have met any number of girls like Nancy and then game over. He had a blind spot for the worst kind of people.

I think his age also had an impact on it. He was about 18 when he joined an already famous band and his youthful naivety allowed it to get to him. Not to mention his inability to play bass also held him back.

John Lydon is an absolute LEGEND. Remember living in Germany in 1976 when the Pistol's came out. It's not until we got back to Blighty the following year that I realised what they were all about. And I was only 10 at that time.

I am 10 years clean now since january 2017 but I have exactly the same that I still dream of using to inject H or H with K (Coce)together and when I wake up I am glad that I had no relapse.But I try never again,it was a hard way!
It is heaven and hell.

I guessed from the title "guilt". Lydon must have already known, Sid had an addiction problem. Add to that. Fame, money and yes men. This was never going to end well.
